The Capilano University since 1 September 2008, a state university in North Vancouver in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The forerunner institution was Capilano College , which existed since 1968. She was promoted to the British Columbia Center for Tourism Leadership and Innovation in 2004 in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics . The university campuses are located in Squamish and Sechelt .

The name is reminiscent of the Squamish chief Joseph Capilano .

history

The Capilano College had when it was founded in 1968 just 784 students. The school boards of North and West Vancouver , Howe Sound and Sechelt had agreed to found such a college as early as 1964 , but the company was not implemented until a referendum in 1967, although the residents of Sechelt rejected the establishment.

The residents of the North Shore region collected suggestions for names, and the name Capilano caught on . In 1970 the Capilano College Foundation came into being , which finances scholarships and additional lecturers.

1973 opened the main campus, the North Vancouver campus in 2055 Purcell Way with 1965 students, whereby the West Vancouver Secondary School helped with mobile buildings. In that year the library opened as the first permanent building , followed by the Arbutus building in 1976 and the Fir building in 1982 . In 1991 the Cedar building , the Sportsplex and the Horticulture building were completed, followed in 1996 by the Birch building , which houses a theater. In the same year the Child Care Center was opened, which cares for the children of students. In 1993 a new library building replaced the old library, which had become too small.

Construction began on Squamish Campus in 1973 and the Learning Center was completed the next year. However, the campus only received permanent structures in 1979.

The Sunshine Coast campus only followed in 1977 . It was renamed the Sechelt campus in 1980 and accepted students from the region of the same name.

In 2008 the college was promoted to a university. Its first chancellor was Peter Ufford. Ufford came from the University of British Columbia and is a member of the National Olympic Committee of Canada .

In August 2009 the university received the funds it needed to build a new film center.

Course offer

Capilano offers six so-called bachelor degrees , 16 associate degrees and more than 30 diploma programs. There are six faculties (academic divisions): liberal arts , business administration , and courses of study that are more likely to be assigned to universities of applied sciences in Germany, such as tourism or leisure, but also health and education.

What sets Capilano apart are interdisciplinary programs such as global stewardship, culture and technology, and British Columbia studies. Programs on applied ethics, design or illustration, and music therapy are also offered.
