Laurentian University ( French Université Laurentienne ) is a state public bilingual research university with its headquarters in Greater Sudbury , Canada . The university was founded on March 28, 1960 and offers Bachelor, Master and PhD programs. In 2012, around 9,000 students were enrolled in the Bachelor's degree and 500 students in the Master's degree programs. Since 2005 the university has operated a medical school, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The Medical School offers special fields of study in the medical field.

history

Laurentian's beginnings go back to the Roman Catholic Church . For example, a university was founded by representatives of the Roman Catholic, United, and Anglican churches in the 1959–60 academic year. In 1964 the main campus opened in Greater Sudbury.

The main campus is located south of Lake Ramsey and the downtown area of ​​Sudbury in the Bell Grove neighborhood. At the university there are two independent student associations for full-time and part-time students. There is also the Francophone Student's Association (AEF), for predominantly French-speaking students, while the Student's General Association (SGA) is responsible for English- and French-speaking students.
