Alexander Baumann (swimmer)
Alexander "Alex" Baumann , OC , O.Ont (* 21st April 1964 in Prague ) is a former Canadian swimmers with Czechoslovakian ancestry.
Born in Czechoslovakia, his parents immigrated to Canada with him in connection with the breaking up of the Prague Spring in 1973. At the age of nine, Alex Baumann received regular swimming lessons. In 1981 held Baumann 38 Canadian swimming records and won at the Commonwealth Games , two gold medals in the 200m and 400m layers . He experienced his sporting climax at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , when he became Olympic champion over both individual medley courses in a world record time. These were the first Olympic gold medals for Canada since 1912. In 1987 he retired from his career.
In 1992 he was inducted into the international swimming sport hall of fame .
