Charles Hickcox

Charles Buchanan "Charlie" Hickcox (born February 6, 1947 in Phoenix , Arizona , † June 15, 2010 in San Diego , California ) was an American swimmer .

At the beginning of his career he only won one national title over the 400 m individual medley . It was therefore surprising that the back swimmer Hickcox won the gold medal in the 200 m and 400 m medley at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico . In addition, he was Olympic champion with the 4 × 100 m layer relay of the Americans . Over 100 m back he won the silver medal .

The following year he retired from competitive sports and became a television commentator and coach. In 1976 he was inducted into the international swimming sport hall of fame .

Hickcox reached the peak of his career between 1967 and 1968 when he swam 8 world records within 16 months. During this time he trained at Indiana University under coach James Counsilman .
