James Edward "Doc" Counsilman (born December 28, 1920 in Birmingham, Alabama , † January 4, 2004 in Bloomington, Indiana ) was an American physiologist and swimming coach.

Life

The doctor of physiology was the head coach of the men's swimming team at Indiana University ( USA ) from 1958 to 1990 .

He was also the head coach of the two most successful US men's teams to date at the Olympic Games in swimming ( 1964 in Tokyo and 1976 in Montreal ). In 1964 in Tokyo, his Olympic team won seven out of ten possible gold medals for men. At the Olympic Games in 1976 in Montreal his team won 12 of 13 gold medals in men. His swimming team at Indiana University won six consecutive championships from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from 1968 to 1973 .

Dr. James E. Counsilman is considered to be one of the pioneers in the field of scientific development of efficient swimming techniques and innovative training methods. His science-based book, The Science of Swimming , was published in 1968 and received worldwide recognition among swimming coaches. The book is considered a classic in swimming training literature.

He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1976 . "Doc" Counsilman trained at Indiana University a . a. High-performance swimmers like Mark Spitz , James Montgomery , Michael Troy , Charles Hickcox , Donald McKenzie , Gary Hall senior , John Kinsella , Chet Jastremski , Mike Stamm , Ted Stickles , John Murphy , Fred Tyler , Alan Somers , or Tom Stock . At the State University of New York in Cortland , he trained the long-distance swimmer George Breen in the 1950s .
