Cortland is a city in the US state of New York . The city had a population of 19,204 at the 2010 Census and is the administrative seat of the county of the same name . It is surrounded by Cortlandville .
Cortland is named after the first lieutenant governor of the state, Pierre Van Cortlandt . Another name for the place is Crown City ; The city owes its name to the fact that it is clearly elevated above the surrounding landscape, that is, it is "crowned".

Cortland is between Syracuse and Binghamton . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city covers an area of 10 km², of which 0.51% is water. The city borders the town of Cortlandville.
history
The present urban area was first settled by Europeans in 1791. In 1853 the settlement achieved the status of a village , in 1900 as the forty-first city in the state the status of a city. After the creation of the county, Cortland was designated as the administrative center.
The economic focus of the city was in the late 19th century in the wire production, the largest company was Wickwire Brothers , which produced large-meshed grids by means of wire drawing , which were used for fly screens. Various municipal facilities such as a school and a museum are now housed in the representative residential buildings of the founding family. The Brockway Motor Company , a pioneer in truck production , was also based in Cortland .
Cortland has been home to the State University of New York since 1868 .

The population was distributed over 6,922 households in 2000. The population density was 1,845.8 people per km². The population was composed of 95.72% white, 1.56% African American , 0.57% Asian and 0.25% Indian . 0.56% said they belonged to another race, 1.33% said they were multiracial. Regardless of race, 1.72% of the population was Hispanic . The per capita income was $ 14,267.
