John Kinsella (swimmer)

John Pitann Kinsella (born August 26, 1952 in Oak Park, Illinois, USA ) is a former American swimmer.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he won the silver medal in the 1500 m freestyle at the age of 16. In 1970 he set a world record in this discipline.

In 1972 in Munich he won gold in the USA's 4 × 200 m freestyle relay . Then Kinsella specialized professionally in long distance swimming.

He was the first person to swim the 1,500 m freestyle in under 16 minutes.

John Kinsella trained a. a. at Indiana University under coach James Counsilman and won six NCAA titles during that time .

He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1986 .
