Assessments and experience reports (selection)
swim
The city of Los Angeles had gone to great lengths to make a wonderful stadium for the swimmers. Among other things, 15 million pure tap water was poured into the basin and the sun warmed the water to an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. Since it was also very soft, some athletes had problems with it, such as the Finn Reingoldt, who said he couldn't get a proper grip on it. Under the heading Nippon, the new world power of water sports , the following assessment can be read:
“Far beyond the scope of the swimming competitions, these games were shaped by the triumphant advance of Japanese swimmers. [...] At a time when bathing, and especially swimming, was considered a disgrace in Germany, Japan's swimming culture was already old and popular. [...] The old culture is very often the basis for a fast, healthy modern one Development. ”The Japanese government made sure that swimming lessons could take place in schools. Hundreds of new swimming pools have been built since the 1928 OSS . Swimming festivals, competitions and national championships promoted the best and especially young talent. In addition to the traditional breaststroke, other types of swimming such as the crawl with a special leg kick and rotating ( paragraph-shaped ) arm movements were also developed.
- Kitamura , who was just 15 years old at the time of the start, was the second youngest participant in the entire 1932 Games and won the 1500 meters. About the final it says: “Kitamura seems to slide over the water, Makino ( who won the silver medal ) takes a breath by turning his head to the left, Kitamura turns him to the right. So the two saw each other face to face and were able to direct each other. The young Australian Ryan offered more than a third desperate resistance, [...] but before the kilometer was completed it was decided that this was a purely Japanese matter. "
- “Japan has fought for supremacy in swimming and it looks like it will be able to defend its primacy for a few Olympics now. His master guard is as numerous as it is strong, as young as it is practiced and soon also experienced. "
horse riding
All riding teams were exclusively soldiers. Before the final show jumping, there was a big parade in the stadium, where among others the golden Frenchman Xavier François Lesage gave a special dressage demonstration to the great applause of the audience. - A brief description of the final situation reads as follows: “A scream broke out when the American Chamberlain had made the last jump on Tanbark . Only twelve penalty points! [...] But the little Japanese prince Nishi is already riding up on a huge steed . He flies over every obstacle, his horse refuses to jump only once and at the last obstacle he throws up a beam with one hind leg. Eight mistakes, that is more than a flawless course today, that is really victory. "
