Nishida Shūhei ( Japanese 西 田 修 平 ; born May 21, 1910 in Nachi-Katsuura , Wakayama Prefecture ; † April 13, 1997 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese athlete who was one of the world's top pole vaulters in the 1930s . He won two Olympic silver medals.
- At the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, he jumped 4.30 m and was defeated by the victorious American Bill Miller by just a single centimeter. The third place, George Jefferson , came to 4.20 m.
- At the Olympic pole vault competition in Berlin in 1936 , the result was even tighter: Nishida, with a jump of 4.25, was ten centimeters below the performance of Earle Meadows , who won gold with 4.35 m, but only won the silver medal because of the lower number of failed attempts towards his farmer Ōe Sueo .
Nishida was particularly successful at the Summer Student World Championships and the International University Games, the forerunners of the Universiade . He won three medals:
- Silver with 3.70 m 1928 in Paris
- Gold with 4.11 m in 1930 in Darmstadt
- Gold with 4.30 m in 1935 in Budapest
In 1930 he was victorious at the Far East Championships in Tokyo with 4.00 m. In 1951, the 41-year-old took part in the Asian Games in New Delhi , India , and finished third with a jump of 3.61 m. Nothing is known about his performance at the Japanese national championships.
Nishida graduated from Waseda University . After the Second World War he was the manager of the Japanese national athletics team. He was also on the board of the Amateur Athletes' Federation of Japan in the 1950s and 1960s.
