etymology

The term comes from the word honor as well as scroll , the typical book form of antiquity. In the Middle Ages, parchment scrolls  (picture) were mainly used for administrative directories. A similar term is the master role , in particular the troop master role , i.e. the personnel list of a military unit , for example a company .

Nowadays, scrolls of honor are of course hardly any parchment scrolls, often not even lists on paper , but mostly files that can be accessed via the Internet . But there are also Roll of Honors made of stone , glass or metal , especially at military memorials, such as the memorial for those shot at Woeste Hoeve or the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington .
