from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralph Röber (* 1959 in Bad Pyrmont ) is a German medieval and modern archaeologist.

Life

Ralph Röber studied prehistory and early history, ancient and medieval history as well as folklore at the University of Münster and received his doctorate there in 1987 under Torsten Capelle with a dissertation on "The early medieval ceramics from Warendorf".

From 1988 to 1989 Röber was a research assistant at the Westphalian Museum of Archeology - Medieval specialist lecture with the task of publishing the ceramic material of the tom Roden monastery near Höxter. He then worked as a scientific volunteer at the same institution until 1991, where he led emergency rescues and excavations in Westphalia.

Since July 1991 he has been curator for the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times at the Archaeological State Museum Baden-Württemberg in Konstanz . In this capacity, he has been overseeing excavations in the city of Constance since 1995 on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office , and from 2000 to 2012 he was the head of the Constance Office of the State Monuments Office as a sideline.

In 1997 he took into account one of his scientific focal points and founded the international working group for archaeological research into medieval handicrafts, of which he is still head today. This has now met 17 times, and numerous conferences have been published.

In 2000, parallel to the opening of a shipping department in the State Archaeological Museum, a scientific project on early shipping in south-west Germany was completed.

From 2005 to 2017 Röber was on the board of the German Society for Archeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times . In addition, he was co-organizer of the interdisciplinary conference "Change in the City around 1200. The Structural and Social Transformation of the City in the High Middle Ages", which was held in 2011 in Esslingen.

With the exhibition “GlasKlar - Archeology of a Precious Material”, he took account of a more recent field of research, to which a comprehensive overview of the state of research in Baden-Württemberg was published as an accompanying volume. His most recent project was an exhibition about the coexistence of Jews and Christians in the Lake Constance region, which was initiated by Dorothea Weltecke , then Chair of Comparative Religious Studies at the University of Konstanz, and led together with him.

Röber gave lectures at the University of Konstanz in 1994 and 1995 , he has been teaching at the University of Tübingen since 1998 , and in 2005 he was appointed honorary professor there. He is a reviewer for the German National Academic Foundation, the Federal Ministry for Science and Research and the German Research Foundation.

Röber has published on almost all areas of medieval-early modern material culture. There is also a focus on the archeology of handicrafts and research into the medieval city.
