The Archaeological State Museum Baden-Württemberg looks after the state archeology of Baden-Württemberg by archiving archaeological finds from the state and presenting them in special exhibitions and several museums.

The central permanent collection is located in Constance . Other Baden-Württemberg collections and exhibitions are subordinate to the State Museum.

The founding of the State Museum was decided on June 8, 1990 by the State Cabinet Späth . The founding director was Dieter Planck , from 2010 until his retirement on September 1, 2018, Jörg Heiligmann was in charge of the museum and Claus Wolf has been in charge of the museum since July 1, 2019 - as did Dieter Planck at times in personal union with the management of the State Monuments Office .

Central Constance

The headquarters in Constance houses the most important permanent exhibition of the Archaeological State Museum Baden-Württemberg. It is housed in the convent building of the former Benedictine Abbey Petershausen and was initially opened as a branch on March 14, 1992. Since 2010 the museum is no longer a branch, but an independent museum. Their large collection presents a cross-section of the country's history by means of a representative selection of archaeological finds.

Permanent exhibitions

The permanent exhibition in Konstanz has 3000 square meters of exhibition space on three floors and consists of several themed rooms:

Special exhibits

Trossinger lyre , 580 AD
  • Since 2007, the State Museum has presented the so-called Trossinger Lyre , a find from an Alemannic grave near Trossingen , which is dated to the year 580 AD. The lyre is almost completely preserved and is considered the best-preserved of the 15 known early medieval examples.
  • In the entrance area, in the area of ​​the stairs, there is the original of the Weilheim menhir , a partially relief monolith from the early Bronze Age .
  • The oldest ship on Lake Constance from 1340 AD was used to transport goods and is shown in a specially built glass annex of the museum.

Archeology & Playmobil

Since 2006, the Archeology and Playmobil exhibition has been taking place regularly on the top floor of the Konstanz headquarters at Christmas time. Here, on 100 square meters, various historical epochs are represented using toy figures. The topics included:

National exhibitions

The Archaeological State Museum Baden-Württemberg presented the major state exhibitions Baden-Württemberg in 1997 "The Alamanni ", 2005 " Imperium Romanum - Rome's provinces on the Neckar, Rhine and Danube" and 2009 "Ice Age - Art and Culture", which were held in changing exhibition buildings in Stuttgart (for example in the art building on Schloßplatz or in the building of the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg ). Rastatt office with central archives and branch museums department

The central archives of the Landesmuseum in Rastatt , Baden , opened on June 4, 1999. It is housed in the former military hospital of the Rastatt fortress and serves the central storage of archaeological finds from Baden-Württemberg that cannot be exhibited in the museums. For example, the skeleton finds from the area of ​​the former Vincentius Hospital in Constance near the Schottenkapelle St. Jakob (Constance) are kept in the archive of the State Office for Monument Preservation in Rastatt.
