Dieter Planck (2003)

Dieter Planck (born August 14, 1944 in Rottenburg am Neckar ) is a German archaeologist specializing in Provincial Roman archeology . He was President of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Baden-Württemberg at the Stuttgart Regional Council and Director of the State Archaeological Museum Baden-Württemberg .

Life

After graduating from the Eugen-Bolz-Gymnasium in Rottenburg am Neckar , Planck studied Prehistory , Ancient History , Prehistory and Classical Archeology at the Eberhard-Karls-University of Tübingen and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich .

After receiving his doctorate on Arae Flaviae at the University of Tübingen in 1970, Planck initially worked in the archaeological preservation of monuments in Tübingen, and from January 1, 1972 as a consultant for soil preservation for the administrative district of North Württemberg . From 1979 to 1994 he was in charge of archaeological monument preservation in Baden-Württemberg. At that time, he succeeded in expanding the archaeological monument preservation in Baden-Württemberg, which he achieved in the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1983 onwards, the establishment of archaeological reserves in Baden-Württemberg was guaranteed by a subsidy for the purchase of land, through which some important ancient sites in the state could be saved from modern destruction. The catalog of measures adopted at that time for these cultural goods was withdrawn when the country was reformed. In 1992 he was appointed director of the newly founded Archaeological State Museum Baden-Württemberg . In addition, he established the Open Monument Day in Baden-Württemberg in 1993 . In May 1994, Planck became President of the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office , which since January 1, 2005 has been incorporated as a department of the Stuttgart Regional Council . From then until August 2009 he was President of Department 8 - State Office for Monument Preservation - of the Stuttgart Regional Council. He also teaches at the Historical Institute of the University of Stuttgart as an honorary professor.

In 1971, Planck worked at the Köngen Fort and the camp village that went with it. His commitment to the preservation of what is now the only fort on the Neckar Limes that was saved from overbuilding was the basis for its appointment as a cultural monument in 1974 . Planck also supported the conception of the Roman park and the museum in Köngen . In autumn 1973 and spring 1974, the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office, under the direction of Planck, excavated the Limestor Dalkingen on the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes . In 1975 the facility was opened to the public. The findings from this work have in part brought entirely new aspects to Roman frontier research. The Limestor Dalkingen became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 together with the border fortifications and was declared a cultural monument in 2006. From 1976 to 1981 Planck worked at the Ostkastell in Welzheim , whereby the excavations concentrated on the defensive walls in order to preserve the interior of the camp as an archaeological reserve. In the ancient wells discovered there, some spectacular finds were made. With Dietwulf Baatz u. a. he was involved in the reconstruction of the west gate of the facility, which was opened to the public in 1983. From 1979 to 1989 Dieter Planck was in charge of the excavations and the conservation of the staff building ( Principia ) at the Limesmuseum Aalen .

September 4, 2009 by the then Planck was Baden-Württemberg Economics Minister Ernst Pfister retired from his post as president of the State Conservation Office Baden-Wuerttemberg to retire. His successor was Claus Wolf .

From 1988 to 2003, Planck was chairman of the Association of State Archaeologists in the Federal Republic of Germany . He is a member of the German Archaeological Institute and since 1980 of the Roman-Germanic Commission . He is a founding member of the German Limes Commission and was its chairman from 2003 to 2009. He has been chairman of the Society for Prehistory and Early History in Württemberg and Hohenzollern since 1988 and was chairman of the jury of the Baden-Württemberg Archeology Prize until his departure in 2009 (his successor is Claus Wolf , department president and head of the State Office for Monument Preservation in the Stuttgart regional council ).
