After receiving his doctorate , Haller joined the Federal Ministry of Finance in 1977 . Most recently he was State Secretary and the Federal Chancellor's personal representative for the preparation of the world economic summit.

From January 1, 1993, he headed Department IX in the Federal Ministry of Finance. Haller made a significant contribution to the introduction of the European currency. From March 1, 2006 to September 30, 2009 Haller was head of the Federal President's Office in Berlin. Horst Köhler and Haller were personal friends. They had known each other since the time when they both worked in the Federal Ministry of Finance at the time of Minister Gerhard Stoltenberg . Haller's successor in this position was Hans-Jürgen Wolff .

In addition to his political activities, Haller has been a member of the board of the Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft (WBG) since 1998 and was its chairman from 2007. There he pushed the takeover of the Philipp von Zabern publishing house and the audio book publisher auditorium maximum . His successor in this office was temporarily Dieter Planck .

Haller died after a brief serious illness in Bremen and was buried in Heidelberg . His death and the problems that arose after he left the office of the Federal President are cited as a reason for the resignation of Federal President Koehler on May 31, 2010.

criticism

Gert Haller worked as Head of the Office of the Federal President in the rank of State Secretary, waived a regular salary and instead worked for a symbolic euro. His former employer, the financial group Wüstenrot & Württembergische AG, from which Haller received a pension after retiring as chairman of the board, paid for his living. The publicist and former SPD politician Albrecht Müller criticized the fact that the insurance industry in Haller had a representative in the Federal President's Office who, due to his position, had the opportunity to influence decision-makers as an advocate of funded private provision (see " Pension Provision ").
