Dietrich Spangenberg (born June 25, 1922 in Dömitz ; † August 3, 1990 in Berlin ) was a German SPD politician .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1942, Spangenberg began studying medicine in Greifswald, but was drafted into the Wehrmacht in the same year and later awarded the German Cross in Gold . After the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , he was transferred to Penal Division 999 for sympathy with the resistance fighters and was captured by Russia at the end of the war. After his discharge, he initially worked on the reconstruction of the hospital in his hometown of Dömitz before continuing his studies in Berlin in 1947. There was one year later to the student representatives of the founding committee of the Free University of Berlin , was 1950-51 student council -President at the Free University and then headed until 1958, the Office for all-German student questions of the Association of German student bodies , the politically persecuted for the fate students the GDR took care of. In 1958 he switched to the Berlin State Service without a formal degree and initially headed the State Center for Political Education until 1963 .

Spangenberg was buried in the Dahlem cemetery in Berlin.

Political party

According to research by the weekly magazine Focus , Spangenberg is said to have joined the NSDAP at the age of 18 . After the Second World War, Spangenberg was a member of the SPD. For many years he was a member of the board of trustees of the Gustav Heinemann Citizens Prize, appointed by the party executive .

Public offices

From 1963 to 1967 Spangenberg was head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery under his mentor Willy Brandt . In 1967 he took over the management of the Senate Department for the Interior for a few weeks, and then until June 4, 1969, he was Senator for Federal Affairs. After Gustav Heinemann was elected Federal President , he moved to the Office of the Federal President as State Secretary , which he headed throughout Heinemann's term of office. In 1974 he was appointed permanent state secretary to the Federal Chancellery and until the change of government in 1982 he was the representative of the Federal Government in Berlin. Since 1977 he has also been State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Internal German Relations .
