Christian Gaebler (born December 8, 1964 in Berlin ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery as State Secretary since April 17, 2018 .

Previously, he was State Secretary in the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment (2011–2016) and in the Senate Department for Interior and Sport of the State of Berlin (2016–2018).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1982 at the Schiller-Gymnasium in Berlin-Charlottenburg , Gaebler studied transportation at the Technical University of Berlin , specializing in planning and operations, and in 1992 received a degree in engineering . He then worked as a research assistant until 1995 and as a project manager at private planning offices. From January 1996 to 2001 he worked as a freelance traffic planner.

Since 2003 Gaebler has been running a restaurant on Oranienplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg together with Robert Krainovic . The restaurant, which he took over from Andreas Matthae († 2004), is considered a meeting place for Berlin politicians.

Gaebler is a member of the TRANSNET trade union and the German Transport Science Society .

Parliamentarians

Gaebler joined the SPD in 1981. In the district of Berlin-Wilmersdorf he was district chairman of the Jusos from 1983 to 1985 and from 1989 a member of the district executive of the SPD. He had been the district chairman there since 1996 and remained so in the merged district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf from 2000 . On April 13, 2018, he announced that he would give up the 2019 district chairmanship.

During his studies, Gaebler was a member of the student parliament and the general student committee of the TU Berlin and on the board of the Studentenwerk Berlin. As a student and as a delegate, he was a member of the (dormant) board of trustees of the TU Berlin.

From 1992 to 1995 Gaebler was Citizens' Deputy in the Committee for Economics and Real Estate at the Wilmersdorf District Assembly .

Christian Gaebler was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives from 1995 to 2011 . In the elections in 1995 and 1999 he was elected via the Wilmersdorfer district list of the SPD, in 2001 and 2006 he moved into parliament as a direct candidate in the constituency of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf 7 .

His main subjects were transport as well as science and research. Since 1999 he has been the transport policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group . Within the parliamentary group's executive committee, he was an assessor from 1997 to 1998 and deputy chairman from 1998 to 2001.

From 2001 he was parliamentary manager of the parliamentary group. In the House of Representatives he was most recently a member of the Council of Elders and the Committee for Urban Development and Transport. He belonged to the left wing ( parliamentary left ) of the SPD parliamentary group.

In the 2011 election , he could no longer win his constituency and eventually left the House of Representatives.

State Secretary

After the elections to the Berlin House of Representatives in 2011, Gaebler was appointed State Secretary for Urban Development in Senate Wowereit IV in the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment. After Michael Müller was elected Governing Mayor in December 2014, he remained in this position. In addition, he also took over the chairmanship of the supervisory board of the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association .

In December 2016, Gaebler was appointed State Secretary for Sport in Senate Müller II in the Senate Department for Internal Affairs and Sport led by Andreas Geisel .

After Björn Böhning moved to the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs , Gaebler was appointed the new head of the Senate Chancellery on April 17, 2018.
