From December 1, 2014 to August 15, 2019, he was the successor of Holger Münch, Bremen State Councilor and Deputy and Senator for Interior , Ulrich Mäurer (SPD). He has been the head of the Senate Chancellery in Bremen since August 15, 2019.

politics

Ehmke has been a member of the SPD since 1995. From 1996 to 1998 he was a member of the sub-district and state board of the Jusos, from 1998 to 2001 chairman of the Jusos sub-district of Bremen-Stadt and from 2001 to 2006 Juso state chairman in Bremen. From 1998 to 2002 he was a member of the state executive committee of the SPD, from 2006 to 2010 deputy state chairman of the SPD Bremen.

From 1999 to 2011 he was a member of the Bremen citizenship with interruptions . He was represented in the committees for science and research, for the facilitation of popular legislation and further development of the electoral law, for state youth welfare, in the legal committee, in the parliamentary control commission, in the constitution and rules of procedure committee, in temporary committees according to Article 125 of the state constitution and in the electoral examination court as well as by 2003 to 2011 in the Deputation for Internal Affairs. From 2009 he was the domestic policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group.

Ehmke was seen in the SPD state executive as a left counterweight to the SPD state chairman, the Bremerhaven member of the Bundestag and former port senator Uwe Beckmeyer . He is considered a confidante of the former SPD parliamentary group leader and former Bremen party chairman Carsten Sieling and Mayor Jens Böhrnsen .

The SPD politician is an offensive supporter of a red-green coalition after the may 2007 elections. After the 2003 election, he publicly spoke out in favor of red-green in Bremen. Ehmke never made a secret of his rejection of the grand coalition of the SPD and CDU in the citizenship , which has governed together since 1995. Nevertheless, he always voted in accordance with the coalition rationale. Although he often publicly spoke out against such plans, such as the study accounts introduced under pressure from the CDU , he always voted in parliament for what earned him the reputation of a careerist in the camp of the left-wing Bremen Jusos and for breaking with old Juso allies led.
