Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff (born February 17, 1976 in East Berlin ) is a German politician ( Die Linke ) and university professor .

From December 2006 to December 2011 he was State Secretary for Health, Environment and Consumer Protection in Berlin and has been honorary professor for social sciences at the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences in Berlin since 2010 . From December 5, 2014 to February 5, 2020 he was head of the Thuringian State Chancellery in the Ramelow I cabinet in the Free State of Thuringia and was also Minister for Culture, Federal and European Affairs. Since November 26, 2019, he has also been acting Minister for Infrastructure and Agriculture .

On March 4, 2020, he was reappointed minister of his previous ministry in the Ramelow II cabinet . He was also reassigned the provisional management of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Agriculture. On January 22, 2019, he was appointed the state government's anti-Semitism commissioner.

education and profession

From 1982 he attended the polytechnic high school "Heinrich Dorrenbach" in Berlin-Mitte, which he left in 1990 to change to the Max Planck Gymnasium in Berlin-Mitte. There he passed his Abitur in 1995. From 1996 to 2001 he completed a degree in social sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He also received the “Humboldt Prize”, which honors excellent academic work by students.

From 1999 to 2006 he taught with teaching assignments at the FU and the HU Berlin. He received his doctorate from the Institute for Social Sciences at Humboldt University under Claus Offe (“Solidarity, Competition and Budget Crises in the Federal Welfare State”) with the grade Magna cum laude. From 2005 to 2006 he was head of the federal-state coordination in the parliamentary group Die Linke . From December 2006 to December 2011 he was State Secretary in the Senate Department for Health, Environment and Consumer Protection in Berlin. In 2010 he was made an honorary professor at the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences and has been a Fellow of the School of Law, Politics and Sociology at the University of Sussex since March 2013 . From 2012 until his appointment as minister in Thuringia, he was a managing partner of MehrWertConsult - strategy consulting. From December 2012 to December 2013 he was also the rector of the state-recognized BEST Sabel University of Berlin . Since 2017 he has been teaching regularly at the University of Erfurt . Hoff is the anti-Semitism commissioner for the state government.

He is married and has three sons.

In 1995, 1999 and 2001, Hoff was directly elected to the Berlin House of Representatives, from which he resigned in 2006.

Memberships

In 1993 he joined the PDS . From 2004 to the end of 2006 he was a member of the federal board of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung and from 2010 to 2013 he was the national spokesman for the Forum for Democratic Socialism .

He is a member of the IG Metall trade union and the party research working group of the German Association for Political Science (DVWP). He is also a member of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft (KuPoGe), the Federation of Democratic Scholars (BdWI), the German Association for Parliamentary Issues (DVParl) and the support association of the “Blätter für German and international politics”.

As a child or adolescent in the GDR , Hoff was a member of the Young Pioneers and the Free German Youth . In 1990 he left the FDJ and joined the Independent Socialist Youth Association "Rosa Luxemburg" and later joined the MJV Junge Linke . Through the merger of MJV Young Left and Young Democrats, he became a member of the Young Democrats / Young Left in 1992, with a short interruption . At that time, Hoff was also a member of the country's student council Berlin and the former Federal Student Council .

Hoff was a member of the board of directors of the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank .
