Stephan Holthoff doorman born, Stephan Pförtner , (born October 5, 1948 in Essen ) is a German lawyer , media entrepreneur , lobbyist and politician ( CDU ).

He is the adopted son of WAZ co-owner Gisela Holthoff and a partner and spokesman for the Funke Familien Gesellschaft , which initially held 50% of the WAZ media group, but has since taken over the company. As a criminal defense attorney in several high-profile court cases, Holthoff-Pförtner gained national recognition.

Since 2017 he has been Minister for Federal and European Affairs and International Affairs for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Laschet cabinet .

Studies and professional career

From 1968 Holthoff-Pförtner studied law at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . During this time he joined the student association KDStV Hercynia . In 1971, in this capacity, he became the suburban president of the Cartell Association of German Catholic Student Associations . During this time be carried outing . After completing the first state examination in law, he became a trainee lawyer at the Essen District Court . He then founded a law firm in Essen. His focus was on criminal law. Following this mandate, Holthoff-Pförtner was part of Kohl's closer private circle. After his death, he and Kohl's second wife Maike Kohl-Richter managed the estate of the former Federal Chancellor . During Kohl's lifetime, in 2014, at his request, he had already declared that after Kohl's death there would be a foundation to look after Kohl's “intellectual and political legacy”. After being voted out of office as Federal Chancellor in 1998, Helmut Kohl himself initially provided the CDU-affiliated Konrad Adenauer Foundation with extensive reference files for their archive in Sankt Augustin . In 2010, however, he had them picked up again in order to transfer them to a foundation after his death.

Other prominent mandates of Holthoff porter included advising the then Mayor of Duisburg, Adolf Sauerland, after the accident at the Love Parade in 2010, and defending Robert Hoyzer after the soccer betting scandal in 2005 . In 2012 he took over the advice of the former Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Stefan Mappus in the EnBW affair .

In addition, Holthoff was a porter as President of the International Association of Sports and Leisure Facilities and as a member of the Presidium of the Caritas Association for the City of Essen e. V. active.

Politics and association activities

Holthoff-Pförtner is a member of the CDU and was an advisor to Helmut Kohl ( → professional career ) . However, he did not hold any leading political office until 2015.

After the death of Philipp Missfelders , Holthoff-Pförtner was initially commissioned provisionally with the function of state treasurer of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia in August 2015 , and he was elected to this office in June 2016.

In November 2016 he was unanimously elected President of the Association of German Magazine Publishers (VDZ) and resigned from his position in June 2017 due to his appointment to the North Rhine-Westphalian state cabinet . He was appointed Minister for Federal and European Affairs and International Affairs by Prime Minister Armin Laschet ; He resigned his previous responsibility for the media sector after two months in order to "avoid the impression that he could not make decisions as media minister with the necessary impartiality". The background was his previous association and business activities. Since then, responsibility for the media sector has been taken over by the Prime Minister and, as in other federal states, also taken care of by the head of the State Chancellery.

Holthoff-Pförtner is chairman of the Political Forum Ruhr.

Private

Holthoff-Pförtner has been living in a registered partnership with his colleague Klaus M. Sälzer since 2013 . At the partnership in July 2013 at the Tegernsee, Helmut Kohl and the then Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle were witnesses of the partnership. Holthoff-Pförtner is a member of BVB and Rot-Weiss Essen .
