Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen (born Pfeiffer; born April 25, 1954 in Aachen ) is a German politician ( independent ), lawyer and administrative officer . Since June 30, 2017, she has been Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Laschet cabinet . She was previously Secretary General of the Kulturstiftung der Länder .

Life

Origin and studies

Pfeiffer-Poensgen is the daughter of the Aachen local politician Jost Pfeiffer and the granddaughter of the textile merchant Kurt Pfeiffer . In 1972 she began studying law and history at the Universities of Bonn , Lausanne and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1979 the first state examination followed. She then did her legal clerkship in Hamburg and New York City , which she completed in 1983 with the assessor exam.

Professional career

In 1985 she became a personal assistant to the President of the Hamburg Authority for Science and Research and in 1988 research assistant for the humanities and social sciences as well as for national research funding. In 1989 Pfeiffer-Poensgen took over the office of Chancellor of the University of Music and Dance Cologne , the management of the university administration and became a member of the rectorate. Since 1999 Pfeiffer-Poensgen was alderman for culture and social affairs of the city of Aachen and since 2002 both a member of the board of the Association of German Music Schools and a member of the culture committee of the German Association of Cities . In addition, she is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart. On November 1, 2004, Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen took up the post of General Secretary of the Kulturstiftung der Länder.

Since June 30, 2017, she has been Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Laschet cabinet .

Private

Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen is married to Hanfried Poensgen , the son of the diplomat Gisbert Poensgen .

Awards

Pfeiffer-Poensgen was voted " Science Minister of the Year 2018" by the German University Association.
