Ralph Alexander Lorz (mostly just R. Alexander Lorz ) (born November 30, 1965 in Nuremberg ) is a German legal scholar and Hessian politician ( CDU ). Since January 18, 2014, Alexander Lorz has been Minister of Culture of Hesse in the Bouffier II and III cabinets . He has been a member of the Presidium of the Conference of Education Ministers since 2017 . In 2019 he became President of the Conference of Ministers of Education.

Life and work

At the age of five, Lorz moved with his family to Frankfurt and four years later to Wiesbaden. In 1983 he graduated from the Dilthey School in Wiesbaden. He then studied law and economics at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz until 1988 . He was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . After graduating, he worked as a research assistant for the international lawyer Eibe Riedel at the University of Marburg. After her legal clerkship and doctorate to become a Dr. iur. In 1992 (subject: modern understanding of fundamental and human rights and the philosophy of Kant's freedom), Lorz passed the second state examination in 1993. During a stay in the USA until 1994, he received a scholarship from the Haniel Foundation at Harvard Law School and obtained the title of Master of Laws and completed an internship at the law firm Gadsby & Hannah. He also passed the “New York State Bar Exam” in the USA and was subsequently admitted as Attorney-at-Law .

After returning to Germany in 1994, Lorz worked as a research assistant to Eibe Riedel at the University of Mannheim until 2000 , where he completed his habilitation in 1999 and was authorized to teach public law, including international and European law, as well as legal philosophy. In 2000, Lorz was appointed full professor for German and foreign public law, international law and European law at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . In 2008, his application for the post of rector of Düsseldorf University was unsuccessful. In 2012 he was dean of the local law faculty. In order to carry out his political duties as State Secretary in Hesse, he was given leave of absence from his university activities. Lorz has been an adjunct professor at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf since 2014.

He was married to Birgit Zeimetz for the first time and has a son with her. In his second marriage he is married to Alexandra Diehl and has a daughter with her.

Political career

At the age of twelve, Ralph Alexander Lorz became a member of the Student Union , at 15 the Junge Union and at 18 the CDU. He was vice chairman of the Wiesbaden district association and the Nassau district association of the Junge Union. From 1991 to 1993 he was a member of the state board of the Junge Union Hessen, among other things as a consultant for fundamental issues, from 1995 to 2001 he was a member of the district board of the CDU Wiesbaden. From 2007 to 2009 Lorz was State Secretary in the Koch II cabinet in the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art. On June 1, 2012, he was appointed State Secretary in the Hessian Ministry of Culture in the Bouffier I cabinet . Since January 18, 2014 he has been the Hessian Minister of Education in the Bouffier II and III cabinets . In the state elections in Hesse in 2018 , he was elected to the Hessian state parliament in the Wiesbaden II constituency.
