politics

Gunnar Schellenberger joined the CDU in 1993. In 1994 he was a member of the CDU district executive committee at Schönebeck . Between 1994 and 1996 he was parliamentary group leader in the city council of Calbe (Saale) . From 1999 to 2006 Schellenberger was deputy CDU district association chairman of Schönebeck and from 1999 to 2007 a member of the Schönebeck district assembly. In addition, he was parliamentary group chairman in the city council of Schönebeck between 1999 and 2004 and parliamentary group chairman in the Schönebeck district council from 2004 to 2007. Since 2007 he has been the district chairman of the CDU in the Salzlandkreis and a member of the district council in the Salzlandkreis.

From 2002 to 2016 Schellenberger was a member of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt and represented the constituency of Schönebeck (19) . On May 24, 2016, Schellenberger announced to the President of the State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt that he was renouncing the mandate of parliament because of the assumption of the office of State Secretary. Jens Kolze moved into the state parliament as a substitute on June 1, 2016 from the CDU's state election proposal .

In 2017 it became known that Schellenberger was allowed to drive in a BMW 730d, which is actually reserved for ministers, because of two artificial hip joints. A doctor recommended a special seat which, according to statements by the government of Saxony-Anhalt, was "only available in a 7-series BMW". The left-wing MP Kristin Heiss then called for the top official to resign. She said that anyone who has so obviously lost touch is not suitable for this position. "Where normal citizens sometimes only get a walking aid or a wheelchair paid for by their health insurance company after an objection procedure, the State Secretary is prescribed a car that warms his back, massages and ventilates him."
