Björn Thümler (* 22. November 1970 in Brake ) is a German politician of the CDU and since November 2017 Lower Saxony Minister for Science and Culture in the Cabinet Weil II . Under the Weil I government , he was leader of the opposition in the Lower Saxony state parliament as the parliamentary group leader of his party .

Thümler has been married to Christina Debus since 2004 and lives in Berne . Both are parents of one daughter.

After graduating from high school in 1990 at the Brake Gymnasium , he did his basic military service in the 11th Panzer Grenadier Division in Oldenburg . In 1991 he began studying political science and history in Hanover and Oldenburg , which he completed in 2000 with the academic degree Magister Artium . politics

Thümler has been a member of the CDU and the Junge Union since 1986 . From 1990 to 1996 he was chairman of the Junge Union in the Wesermarsch district and from 1995 to 1999 deputy chairman of the Oldenburg regional association.

In addition, from 1992 to 2002 he was deputy chairman of the CDU district association Wesermarsch. Since 2002 he has been chairman of the district association. On January 25, 2003, he was elected deputy chairman of the CDU regional association in Oldenburg. From July 2003 to October 2008 he was also the country manager.

In 1996 Thümler was elected to the council of the municipality of Berne. In 2013 he gave up this mandate.

Thümler has been a member of the district council of the Wesermarsch district without interruption since 1996. In the local elections in Lower Saxony in 2016 , he was re-elected with the best result of all CDU candidates.

Thümler has been a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament since the 2003 state elections . As the first CDU candidate since Lower Saxony was founded, he won a direct mandate in the Wesermarsch constituency , also in 2008 and 2013 . From 2003 to 2017 he was a member of the Subcommittee on Ports and Shipping and from 2010 to 2017 a member of the Council of Elders . In addition, from 2010 to 2017 he was in the committee for the preparation of the election of the members of the State Court of Justice and in the committee for the preparation of the election and approval under Article 70, Paragraph 2 of the Constitution .

Thümler was deputy chairman of the CDU parliamentary group from 2008 to 2010 and parliamentary managing director from June 2009 to June 2010 . On July 1, 2010 he was elected as the new chairman of the CDU parliamentary group. After the Weil government took office on February 19, 2013, he became opposition leader in the Lower Saxony state parliament; He was also the church political spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group.

In the run-up to the state elections in 2017 , Thümler was appointed to the shadow cabinet of CDU top candidate Bernd Althusmann ; he should take over the finance department. After the coalition negotiations were concluded, he became Minister for Science and Culture of the State of Lower Saxony in the Weil II cabinet .

Other offices

In addition to his parliamentary work, Thümler was appointed to the administrative board of the State Theater Oldenburg in autumn 2005 , to which he was a member until summer 2013. Furthermore, from 2006 to 2011 he was chairman of the association assembly of the Ems-Weser-Elbe supply and disposal association and a member of the association committee. Thümler was also a member of the regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg .

Thümler is currently chairman of the supervisory board of the Wesermarsch economic development agency and deputy chairman of the convent of the Evangelical Academy Loccum .
