Joist Grolle (born August 5, 1932 in Rhoden ) is a German historian , university professor and former politician ( SPD ).

Scientific career

Grolle passed the Abitur in Jena in 1951 . After leaving the GDR immediately afterwards , he studied history and German at the universities in Berlin and Göttingen . His academic teacher was Percy Ernst Schramm . He finished his studies in 1958 with the state examination for higher teaching and the doctorate to Dr. phil. in Göttingen. He then completed his internship in Wiesbaden .

After a year as a research assistant at the Institute for European History in Mainz , he moved in 1962 as a research assistant to the History Department of the University of Giessen . In 1968 he followed the call of the Lower Saxony University of Education / Department Oldenburg (since 1973 University of Oldenburg ) to a chair for history and its didactics, which he held until 1978 - interrupted by the exercise of political offices. During this time Grolle became the editor of the textbook Remember and Judge . From 1987 to 1998 he taught history of education at the University of Hamburg . In 1999 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Oldenburg. Grolle was the first chairman of the Association for Hamburg History from 2007 to 2011 . The 98th volume of the journal of the Association for Hamburg History was published in 2012 as a festschrift for Grolle on his 80th birthday. In the same year he was awarded the Max Brewer Prize .

Political offices

Grolle has been a member of the SPD since 1965 and of the Education and Science Union (GEW) since 1970 . From June 21, 1970 to October 4, 1972, he was an elected member of the Lower Saxony state parliament in constituency no. 77 (Oldenburg-Stadt) . In September 1972, he moved to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education as State Secretary . When the government was formed on July 10, 1974, Prime Minister Alfred Kubel (SPD) appointed him Minister for Science and Art . As on February 13, 1976, the minority government of Ernst Albrecht ( CDU ) took over the reins of government in Lower Saxony, resigned from Grolle from the ministerial post.

Two years later, Grolle took over another government office at the state level when the Hamburg citizenship elected him to the Senate on June 28, 1978. He took over the management of the school, youth and vocational training authority (renamed the school and vocational training authority on March 1, 1980 ). In this capacity, Grolle was chairman of the Standing Conference of Education Ministers of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1983 . His office in the Senate ended when the Hamburg Senate was elected on September 2, 1987.

As a member of the Lower Saxony state government and the Hamburg Senate, Joist Grolle was also a member of the Federal Council : from July 10, 1974 to February 13, 1976 and again from June 28, 1978 to September 2, 1987, each as a deputy member.
