Albert Sauer (* 27. February 1902 in Ravensburg , † 16th June 1981 ) was a German politician of the CDU . He was Minister of Culture of the State of Württemberg-Hohenzollern from 1947 to 1952.

education and profession

Albert Sauer came from a Ravensburger banking family and studied law from 1921 to 1925 at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . During his studies he became a member of the Catholic student association AV Guestfalia Tübingen in the CV . Sauer received his doctorate in 1926 and passed the assessor examination in 1928. From 1928 to 1945 he worked as a lawyer in Ravensburg. During the time of National Socialism he gave legal assistance to Jewish neighbors, Catholic parents and clergymen as well as to various monasteries. After the end of the Second World War , Sauer was taken prisoner in the United States and Belgium for 15 months.

Political activity

In 1932 and 1933 Albert Sauer was a member of the state parliament of the Free People's State of Württemberg for the German Center Party .

After the Second World War he was a co-founder of the CDU. From 1946 to 1966 he was Lord Mayor of the city of Ravensburg and played a key role in shaping its economic and social development in the post-war period. From 1946 to 1947 he was a member of the Advisory State Assembly and then until 1952 of the State Parliament for Württemberg-Hohenzollern . In 1946 and 1947 he was State Secretary for Culture, Education and Art in Württemberg-Hohenzollern. From 1947 to 1952 he was a member of the Gebhard Müller government as Minister for Culture, Education and the Arts. In this function he was also President of the Conference of Ministers of Education .

From 1952 to 1956 he was a member of the state constituent assembly and the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg .

Other offices, honors and awards

In 1960 Albert Sauer was made an honorary senator of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . In 1961 he received the Federal Cross of Merit with a star. In 1966 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Ravensburg. In 1970 the Council of European Municipalities and Regions appointed him an honorary member at the suggestion of the Presidium "in recognition of his work for the unification of the free peoples of Europe and in appreciation of his work as long-time Vice President of the German Section in the Council of European Municipalities".

Since April 2004 the place in front of the Oberschwabenhalle has been called Dr. Albert-Sauer-Platz .

Family and private

The bank manager Hans Dietmar Sauer is the son of Albert Sauer.

Albert Sauer was buried in the main cemetery in Ravensburg.
