Wolfgang Gerhardt (born December 31, 1943 in Helpershain ) is a German politician ( FDP ).

From 1987 to 1991 he was Hessian Minister of State for Science and Art , from 1995 to 2001 federal chairman of the FDP and from 1998 to 2006 chairman of the FDP parliamentary group and thus also opposition leader from November 2005 to April 2006 . From 2006 to 2018 he was chairman of the board of the liberal Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom .

education and profession

After graduating from the Albert-Schweitzer-Schule Alsfeld in 1963, Gerhardt studied educational science , German and politics at the University of Marburg from 1963 to 1969 . In 1970 he received his doctorate there on the educational policy of the FDP after 1945 under Leonhard Froese as Dr. phil. He then worked as the head of the regional office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Hanover . At the same time, he was initially a personal advisor and finally head of the ministerial office of the Hessian State Minister of the Interior until 1978 .

Political party

Gerhardt has been a member of the FDP since 1965. At first he was involved in university and youth politics, among other things he was state chairman of the Liberal Student Union of Germany and deputy state chairman of the German Young Democrats in Hesse in 1967/68 . From 1982 to 1995 he was state chairman of the FDP Hessen . From 1982 he was a member of the FDP federal executive committee . In 1985 he was first deputy chairman, and in 1995 he was appointed national chairman of the FDP as the successor to then Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel . He held this office until May 2001, when he handed it over to the previous Secretary General Guido Westerwelle after internal party criticism .

Gerhardt was then Deputy President of the Liberal International from 2002 to 2012 .

In the event of participation in government after the 2005 Bundestag election , Wolfgang Gerhardt was earmarked for the office of Federal Foreign Minister .

In June 2010 Gerhardt was elected as a member of the program commission, which was supposed to develop a new FDP program by 2013.

Gerhardt was a member of the Hessian state parliament from 1978 to 1982, from 1983 to 1987 and from 1991 to 1994 . Here he was from 1983 to 1987 and from 1991 to 1994 chairman of the parliamentary group .

From 1994 to 2013 Gerhardt was a member of the German Bundestag . After the federal election in 1998 , he was elected on October 5, 1998 as the successor to Hermann Otto Solms as chairman of the FDP parliamentary group. As such, Gerhardt took over the post of opposition leader when the Merkel government took office on November 22, 2005 . On May 1, 2006, he handed over the chairmanship to the party chairman Guido Westerwelle.

Gerhardt has always entered the German Bundestag via the Hesse state list. He did not run for the 2013 federal election .

On April 24, 1987, Gerhardt became Hessian Minister for Science and Art , authorized representative of the State of Hesse at the federal level and at the same time deputy to Prime Minister Walter Wallmann . After the CDU-FDP coalition lost its majority in the 1991 state elections , he left the government on April 5, 1991.

Gerhardt was born in 1943 as the son of a professional soldier. His father fell in 1944. He grew up with his mother on a farm. He is married and has two children.
