Walter Erbe (born June 20, 1909 in Reutlingen , † October 3, 1967 in Tübingen ) was a German politician of the FDP / DVP and law professor at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen .

Life and work

After graduating from high school, Erbe studied law in Tübingen. During his studies he joined the Hohenstaufia gymnastics club . After July 20, 1944 , he was briefly arrested. From 1946 until his death he was professor for Roman and civil law at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . From 1948 to 1951 he was rector of the university. In 1949 he was elected a member of the State Court of Justice for the State of Württemberg-Hohenzollern . The Walter Erbe Realschule in Tübingen is named after him. From November 1950 to February 1955 he was President of the German UNESCO Commission. From 1951 until his death he was also chairman of the board of the Institute for Foreign Relations . He was buried in the Tübingen city cemetery.

Political party

After 1945, Erbe joined the DVP in Württemberg-Baden . At the federal party convention of the FDP in Bad Ems in 1952 , he ran for the federal executive committee. When it turned out after the first ballot that he had to run against his compatriot from Württemberg, Eduard Leuze , among others , in the runoff election, he decided not to run the second ballot so as not to jeopardize the election of Leuze.

Erbe was a member of the state parliament in Baden-Württemberg from 1952 to 1956 and from October 11, 1957, when he succeeded Emmy Diemer-Nicolaus , who was elected to the German Bundestag , until his death .

From its establishment in 1958 to 1961, Erbe was the first chairman of the FDP-affiliated Friedrich Naumann Foundation . A bronze bust of Erbe stands in front of the Theodor Heuss Academy in Gummersbach .
