Hans Wolfgang Rubin (born December 12, 1912 in Essen ; † November 10, 1986 there ) was a German politician ( FDP ) and entrepreneur. He was one of the pioneers of the social-liberal coalition of 1969.

Life and work

Rubin was born the son of a doctor. He did a commercial apprenticeship in the steel industry. From 1939 to 1978 he was a manager in various companies in German heavy industry, most recently as a board member. Soon after the war, he made economic contacts in Central Eastern Europe.

Political party

In addition to Franz Blücher and Hans-Wilhelm Beutler , Rubin was a co-founder of the FDP in Essen in 1945. From 1950 to 1956 he was treasurer of the FDP state association in North Rhine-Westphalia and was a member of the FDP federal executive committee from 1951 to 1980. From 1951 to 1974 he was treasurer of the federal party.

From 1955 Rubin belonged with Walter Scheel , Wolfgang Döring and Willi Weyer to the so-called " Young Turks " in the North Rhine-Westphalian FDP. The meeting of the district, which in 1956 overthrew North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Karl Arnold ( CDU ) and paved the way for a coalition with the SPD and the center , took place in his apartment in Essen. In March 1967 he published an article entitled “The Hour of Truth”, a vehement reckoning with the policies of the grand coalition , in which he pleaded for a new Ostpolitik and suggested various domestic reform proposals. The move sparked lively controversy inside and outside the FDP, but in the medium term it paved the way for the later governing coalition with the SPD.

Friedrich Naumann Foundation

From 1970 to 1982 Rubin was chairman of the FDP-affiliated Friedrich Naumann Foundation . In 1959 he was the founder of the foundation and one of the editors of the magazine liberal until 1986 .

Documents about Rubin's work for the FDP and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation are in the Archives of Liberalism of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Gummersbach .
