The Albert Schweitzer School Alsfeld (ASS for short) is one of the two grammar schools in the Vogelsberg district . Historically, it was the first high school in the area. It currently has about 1250 students , almost all of whom come from a sparsely populated and strongly rural area with a few small towns .

history

The school was founded on January 8, 1861. It was mainly run by Gerhard Jakob Ramspeck, the then mayor of Alsfeld and member of the state parliament of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt , after efforts had been made for several decades to set up a secondary school in rural areas .

The school began operations as a 5-year high school with 52 students. At the end of the first year it had around 100 students and five teachers. After the conversion to a 6-year secondary school, the number of pupils grew to 200 and remained at around this level until the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1907/08 the school was converted into an upper secondary school. The first matriculation examination in Alsfeld took place on March 11, 1909. At the same time, the school received a new school building that is still in use today (the "old building" in Schillerstrasse). In 1928 the school was merged with the higher civil (girls) school.

The grammar school was named Albert Schweitzer School in 1956 after a positive response to an inquiry from Albert Schweitzer in Lambaréné . Schweitzer's reply letter is one of the school's treasures.

In 1981 the outsourced upper level building was inaugurated at the “In der Krebsbach” location.

In 2006 a new extension was completed at the Schillerstraße location .

Location and facilities

Today the school is spread over two locations - about one kilometer apart:

1) The old building from 1909 at the location in Schillerstrasse, which has meanwhile been supplemented by an adjacent extension (referred to as the “new building” at the school). This extension was realized as a low-energy house and was put into use in 2006. Essentially the lower secondary school students are taught there
2) The building at the Krebsbach site, which has been used for upper secondary school since 1981 .

Both locations have a scientific wing, a media library and an auditorium , as well as a cafeteria for lunch.

Since the middle of the second half of the 2008/09 school year, the Albert Schweitzer School has been a model school for the "SmartBoard" interactive whiteboards from SMART Technologies. The company sponsors the equipment that was installed at the “Schillerstraße” location, but in return the school has to provide some services in return, such as presenting the possibilities for other interested schools or designing new learning materials for the boards.

organization

Today the school is organized in the form of a school with pedagogical lunch care. The attempt by the school management, some teachers, parents and students to apply for the conversion to an open all-day school , was clearly rejected by parents and teachers in separate surveys for parents, teachers and students, despite intensive long planning.

The rejection of the parents can result from the specific circumstances of the rural area with a total of 19 large municipalities with a corresponding number of remote areas. More than half of these belong to the school's potential catchment area. The supply of public transport is only sufficiently guaranteed in the rush hours in the morning and at lunchtime, so that outside of this time window privately organized delivery and collection services would be required on the part of the parents, which is almost impossible given the overland travel times of up to 45 minutes. In addition, many students have to use the train connections, which results in travel times of over an hour.

In addition, in many villages and communities the social structure with club offers is still intact and should be preserved by many parents.

In the school year 2010/2011 the idea came up again to convert the school into an open all-day school. A working group consisting of the school management, teachers, parents and students developed a concept that should cause fewer changes in everyday school life than the first attempt. This time, this concept was accepted by all groups in the school community, so that from the school year 2012/2013 the expansion of the afternoon care program will begin until a secure and high quality care can be guaranteed until 5 p.m.

Focus

Lessons focus on the natural sciences and languages . In addition to the usual languages English , Latin and French , Spanish is also offered here, although there are often not enough teachers available for both Spanish and Latin to offer all interested parties the opportunity to continue learning this language or to even begin.

The entrance classes of the lower secondary level are usually five to six courses. It is therefore possible to form individual classes that, in addition to the normal scope of content, also offer lessons in a subject related to inclination over several years. This applies to the already established sports classes or during the last school year , brought to the way strings classes that has learning a string instrument as a target by all students, while also drawing on the help of music teachers.

As a school with extended lunchtime care, there is also an extensive range of voluntary work groups for diverse areas and interests that are well received despite the driving problems.

social commitment

The school organizes projects to raise funds for social purposes. The Run-For-Help, which is organized regularly by the athletes, repeatedly generates up to 20,000 euros per event, which is then donated to a current project (e.g. Unicef for Africa , flood victims, etc.). The compulsory elective course in theater and performing games also regularly takes part in the fundraising campaigns.

There are regular student exchanges with partner schools in England , France , Russia and Poland . According to a recent decision by the school conference, these exchanges are to be expanded to include Spain and the USA . As part of the Comenius program, there has been a student exchange with the city of Hjo in Sweden since the 2008/09 school year .

The low-energy extension

The extension to the secondary level I moved into in 2006 was designed by the school authorities as a modern, low-energy building . In practice, however, it turned out to be difficult for the school staff to regulate the ventilation system, as the closed system reacts very slowly.

Some training measures and corrections were required before the system control had reached the planned final state. From this point on, the desired advantages of this energy-efficient air conditioning became apparent in practice and the consumption values.

In 2007/2008 two studies by the Fresenius Institute tested the indoor air in the new building for a large number of pollutants and found it to be good. There were significant improvements in the climate compared to the rooms in the old building, e.g. B. in the area of CO 2 values.
