Hjo is a city in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and historical province of Västergötland . It is located on the west bank of Lake Vättern about 67 km north of Jönköping . Hjo is also the capital of the municipality of the same name .
history
Hjo is a medieval city first mentioned in written sources in 1413 . Hjo was an important connecting port on the way from Västergötland to Östergötland .
In 1854 a new port and a new city district were built. Two decades later, Hjo was connected to the railway network, which not only favored industrial development. A water spa was also established, which made Hjo a popular bathing resort.
Cityscape
The old town has largely retained its medieval layout. To the north of the old town are the harbor and the city park, which was originally an arboretum belonging to the water spa . The wooden villas of the health resort are still preserved and today they house u. a. a youth hostel and the Vättern aquarium as well as a city museum . In 1990 Hjo received the Europa Nostra Prize for the remarkable preservation of his wooden town.
