Vättern (German Vättersee , from old Swedish vætur for lake, body of water ) is the second largest lake in Sweden and is drained by the Motala stream into the Baltic Sea. The name is first recorded around 1220 in the form " Wetur ". The Vättern is connected to the Vänern via the Göta Canal .

In the north the lake is on average 25 meters deep, in the south it is more than 100 meters deep.

The largest town on Lake Vättern is Jönköping with Huskvarna on the southern shore of the lake. Other cities are Motala , Askersund , Karlsborg and Hjo . In the southern part, the island of Visingsö is directly opposite the small town of Gränna .

Every year in June there is a cycling tour around Lake Vättern for everyone, Vätternrundan . The tour begins and ends in Motala and covers a distance of over 300 kilometers. There is an official time measurement, but no ranking is derived from it.

Trivia

The lake is the namesake for a bathroom furniture series by the Swedish furniture company IKEA .
