Askersund is a locality ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Örebro län and the capital of the municipality of the same name . The settlement was granted city rights in 1643, but these no longer have any legal significance.

The place is on the edge of the forest area Tiveden and Lake Alsen, which is connected to Lake Vättern by a narrow channel . The largest source of income is tourism , as there are popular beaches and campsites here.

history

City map around 1900

The place was laid out at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1884 a 14 km long narrow-gauge railway called Askersund-Skyllberg-Lerbäcks Järnväg was built to Lerbäck , where there was a connection to the standard-gauge line of Hallsberg – Motala – Mjölby Järnväg , today part of Godsstråket genom Bergslagen . At times there were also connections with steamboats to Stockholm , Gothenburg and various places on Vättern. In the 19th century Askersund had its own weekly newspaper, Askersunds veckoblad .
