Motala ström is a river in Sweden between the towns of Motala am Vättern (from which it takes its name) and Norrköping on the Baltic Sea .

The river was of great importance in Norrköping because it has been used to drive mills and use it for other factories since the Middle Ages . Around the same time, many fortifications and manors were built on the river, which monitored traffic on the water.

Since the Viking Age , the rapids of the river have been overcome by towing boats through them with the help of horses . This procedure is documented by rock carvings that are located near the river. In the course of the Motala stream there are seven hydropower plants with a total output of around 55,000 kW.

The Motala stöm forms a section of the Göta Canal .
