The Comenius program is a European Union program set up in 1995 with the aim of promoting cooperation between schools of all school levels and types within the European Union as well as the mobility of pupils and teachers. Until 2005 it was part of the EU program SOCRATES , since 2005 part of the EU program for lifelong learning. It has been part of the EU's Erasmus + education programs since 2014 .

History and individual programs

With the Lifelong Learning Program, the European Union is promoting European cooperation in the field of education from 2007 to 2023. The program covers all educational areas and age groups with four individual programs: COMENIUS for school education, Erasmus for higher education, Leonardo da Vinci for vocational training and Grundtvig for adult education. These programs have been continued together with other EU education programs since 2014 in the Erasmus + program.

Naming

It is named after the pedagogue Johann Amos Comenius . In 1638 Comenius called for “Great Didactics. The complete art of teaching all people everything "the following:

Everything should be presented to the senses wherever possible, what is visible to the face, what is audible to hearing, what can be smelled to smell, what can be felt to the sense of touch. And if something can be received by different senses at the same time, it should be presented to the different ones at the same time. And because the senses are the most faithful administrators of memory, this visualization of things will cause everyone to keep what he knows. "

These ideas and visions from Comenius can only actually be transferred into educational practice at the moment thanks to current digital and multimedia developments.

participation

Anyone involved in the educational process from pre-school to the end of upper secondary education can take part in the Comenius program. These are pupils, teachers, local authorities, institutions and organizations of the school administration, non-governmental organizations, teacher training institutions, universities and other educational staff.
