Evelies Mayer

Evelies Mayer (born January 21, 1938 in Heerlen , Netherlands, as Evelies Magnus) is a German sociologist and science politician ( SPD ).

life and work

Mayer completed a degree in sociology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1964 and received his doctorate in 1970 with a thesis on " Theory on the Functional Change in Trade Unions ". She then taught sociology at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1972 . From 1991 to 1995 she was Minister of State for Science and Art of the State of Hesse in the Eichel I cabinet . In November 1992, as already stated in the coalition agreement, it set up a university structure commission for the State of Hesse, which was mainly made up of external experts and was headed by Karl Peter Grotemeyer . At the end of 1994 the commission presented a comprehensive report "Autonomy and Responsibility - Higher Education Reform Under Difficult Conditions" with proposals for reforming the Hessian universities. Mayer also advocated greater flexibility in the personnel and financial areas of universities. A model test limited to four years was carried out at the TH Darmstadt and the FH Wiesbaden from 1993.

Mayer resigned from office in March 1995 because of "irresponsible austerity decisions in university policy".

After returning to the university, Mayer held numerous offices and functions in science administration and retired in 2003.

Her research area is above all university research, especially in an international comparison.

From 1991 to 1995 she was Minister for Science and Art of the State of Hesse .

Further scientific work

As part of her academic work, she was a visiting professor at the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1995 Mayer has been an external member of the Scientific Center for Vocational and University Research at the University of Kassel . She has been a member of the Austrian Accreditation Council since 2000.

Evelies Mayer was chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Humboldt University of Berlin from 1998 to 2006, member of the board of trustees of the GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) Potsdam and chairwoman of the Brandenburg State University Council. Since 2010 she has been a member of the Foundation Council of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.
