Karl Peter Grotemeyer (born September 8, 1927 in Osnabrück , † July 30, 2007 in Bielefeld ) was a German mathematician . From 1970 to 1992 he was rector of Bielefeld University .

Life

Grotemeyer attended the Besselgymnasium in Minden , followed by military service and imprisonment. From 1947 he completed a degree in mathematics , physics and astronomy at the University of Göttingen , which he completed in 1951 with a doctorate under Theodor Kaluza ( The infinitesimal unbendability of surfaces and the unambiguous determination of surfaces by the first fundamental form ). 1954 followed the habilitation at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg .

After his four-year assistantship at the Technical University of Berlin , he became professor and institute director at the Mathematical Institute of the Free University of Berlin in 1958 . In 1969 he accepted the call to the Mathematical Faculty of Bielefeld University , where he had been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board since 1965.

In March 1970 he was elected rector of Bielefeld University. He held this office until his retirement in 1992, during which time Grotemeyer was re-elected five times.

Act

He mainly dealt with differential geometry, for example questions of congruence, inflexibility and unambiguous determination of surfaces and the characterization of the sphere in global differential geometry. He used the method of integral formulas.

Grotemeyer was heavily involved from the founding year of the University of Bielefeld in 1969 until his retirement in 1992 and shaped today's university. He was also committed to the Oberwolfach Mathematical Research Institute .

Karl Peter Grotemeyer was a member of the Science Council from 1968 to 1972 , Vice-President of the West German Rectors 'Conference from 1971 to 1973 , Chairman of the State Rectors' Conference from 1990 to 1992 and a longstanding member of the WDR Broadcasting Council . After the fall of the Berlin Wall he became involved at the TU Cottbus in 1991 , where he was a member of the founding senate and deputy founding rector.
