From the public advertisements of the Bielefeld district, founded in 1811, the Neue Westfälische was created on July 3, 1967 through the merger of the Westfälische Zeitung with the Freie Presse . The Westfalen-Blatt, based in Bielefeld, appears in the same distribution area . In parts of the Gütersloh district, Neue Westfälische also competes with the daily newspaper Die Glocke, which is published in Oelde .
