The Neue Westfälische (abbreviation NW) is a regional daily newspaper for the Ostwestfalen-Lippe area with a subscription share of around 90 percent. The paper is published by the Bielefelder Zeitungsverlag Neue Westfälische GmbH & Co. KG. Neue Westfälische is the fifth largest media company in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The sole owner of Neue Westfälische has been the Presse-Druck GmbH since January 1, 2016, which is 100% owned by the SPD media holding Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft . JD Küster Nachfahren Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH , whose managing director was Wolfgang Kaeller († March 21, 2017), held around 43% until the end of December 2015 . The Neue Westfälische is the only daily newspaper in which the DDVG holds a majority of the capital. The newspaper is printed by its own subsidiary Küster-Pressedruck GmbH & Co. KG .

The sold circulation is 193,561 copies, a decrease of 26.3 percent since 1998.

General information

From the public advertisements of the Bielefeld district, founded in 1811, the Neue Westfälische was created on July 3, 1967 through the merger of the Westfälische Zeitung with the Freie Presse . The Neue Westfälische also follows the tradition of the Volkswacht newspaper , which appeared in Bielefeld from 1830 to 1933. The NW appears with 16 local editions: Bad Oeynhausener Kurier, Bielefelder Tageblatt (in six individual editions), Bünder Tageblatt , Gütersloher Zeitung, Herford Kreisanzeiger, Kreiszeitung for Höxter and Warburg, Löhner Nachrichten, Paderborner Kreiszeitung, Tageblatt for Enger and Spenge and a newspaper for the Altkreis Luebbecke .

The Neue Westfälische forms a journalistic unit with the Lippische Landes-Zeitung , Detmold , and the Haller Kreisblatt , Halle (Westf.) , Which get the so-called coat from Bielefeld. There is an advertising cooperation with the Mindener Tageblatt . The daily circulation of the Neue Westfälische newspaper group resulting from this cooperation is 193,561 copies, that of the core newspaper 149,806 copies (as of 2012). This makes the Neue Westfälische newspaper with the highest circulation in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region.

The Westfalen-Blatt, based in Bielefeld, appears in the same distribution area . In parts of the Gütersloh district, Neue Westfälische also competes with the daily newspaper Die Glocke, which is published in Oelde .

In addition to the printed newspaper, information is also available via the Internet with its own online presence nw.de as well as the e-paper or investments in local radio stations in Ostwestfalen-Lippe ( Radio Bielefeld , Radio Hochstift , Radio Gütersloh , Radio Herford , Radio Lippe , Radio Westfalica ) mediates. The service center for the local radio stations is the audio media service (ams) production company, in which Neue Westfälische holds shares. In addition, Neue Westfälische holds shares in Pressefunk Nordrhein-Westfalen GmbH & Co. KG, which is the majority shareholder of Radio NRW .

In addition, Neue Westfälische has been involved in the regional mail delivery company Regio Brieflogistik since 2006. The logistics of the Neue Westfälische were used for mail delivery . At the end of 2011, Neue Westfälische ended its involvement in this area.

The Neue Westfälische has about 500 employees, including about 140 editors. There are also around 1,000 freelance employees and correspondents in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Brussels and Washington, as well as around 1,300 delivery agents in the delivery area.

At the Free Press, which merged in 1967 as the newspaper of the SPD's own printing and publishing company (DDVG) with the Westfälische Zeitung in Bielefeld to form the Neue Westfälische, u. a. WDR journalists and directors Friedrich Nowottny and Fritz Pleitgen as well as program director radio and television at NDR, Jürgen Kellermeier , completed their journalistic training and then worked as editors in the politics / news and economics departments.

The journalist, author and publisher Dieter Burkamp was first with the Westfälische Zeitung and then with the Neue Westfälische Redakteur. Until 2001 Ralph Ruthe was a permanent employee of the Neue Westfälische.
