history
As one of the few daily newspapers in Germany, Die Harke has been owned by the Hoffmann / Rumpeltin publishing family for five generations. The roots of the newspaper go back to 1871. The name, which is unique in the German newspaper landscape, was coined at that time: "Our rake should help to cleanse the beloved soil of our homeland from the weeds of spiritual indolence and disbelief. The rake, a tool that everyone uses who tills a piece of maternal earth. Also Our rake is intended for everyone whose content, perspective and line of thought is adapted ", it said in the invitation to the subscription in 1871.
Part of the Edathy Affair
In February 2014 Die Harke reported on an official search of the house of the former MP Sebastian Edathy . To this end, she published a photo online that was taken through a window during the search and showed details of a room. This picture was judged controversially. The Federal Association of the German Association of Journalists said: "All in all, the publication of the apartment photos appears to be (still) justifiable, even if the German jurisdiction can always cause surprises on such issues." The Complaints Committee of the German Press Council, however, saw the publication of the picture as "a serious violation of the protection of personality" (Directive 8.8 of the Press Code ) and issued a public reprimand, the toughest of its sanction options, against the newspaper. The DJV was of the opinion: "The decision of the press council is to be understood as a professional ethical corrective with which the employees of the press are requested to correct their editorial decisions or to exercise them differently in the future. The question of whether the use of images is legally permissible should therefore be treated separately from it. "
In principle, however, the exclusive reporting triggered the Edathy affair . In a Spiegel interview on March 17, 2014, Edathy said: "My hope was that possible investigations would be less likely to become public if I am no longer a member of parliament. It must be said that it did not work."
Edition
Like most German daily newspapers , the Harke has lost circulation in recent years . The number of copies sold has fallen by an average of 2.1% per year over the past 10 years. Last year it decreased by 2.9%. It is currently 16,061 copies. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 91.1 percent.
