Self-expression and activities

The DJV describes itself as a combination of trade union and professional association . He sees himself as representing the interests of both permanent and freelance journalists from all media areas. They can also work in press offices and PR agencies as long as they work as a journalist. The criterion for DJV membership is full-time journalistic activity. In addition to classic collective bargaining tasks, the DJV is also committed to the freedom of the press and information, as well as the quality of journalistic training and further education. He speaks out on all media policy issues, especially in connection with freedom of the press. In 2006, the DJV placed a campaign on the future of journalism under the slogan “Journalisten 21” at the center of its work. In 2007, the press freedom situation at home and abroad was the focus of the work. The DJV is a co-signatory of the joint declaration of the data retention working group against the draft law on data retention . He is also part of the group of shareholders of the press supply founded in 1949 , a supply facility for journalists and media professionals. In spring 2016, the DJV started the blog due to the increasing number of attacks against journalists.

The association was founded in Berlin in 1949, but was then based in Bonn for many decades. In 2000 he opened a capital city office in Berlin and made Berlin his official seat again in 2005.

On September 11, 2007, the German Association of Journalists Berlin (a regional association of the DJV) filed for bankruptcy due to over-indebtedness . According to the insolvency plan , the regional association will be restructured and ready to act again from September 2008 . The DJV Berlin Sozialfonds GmbH, however, could not be restructured; it had to be resolved.

There are 17 regional associations, one for each federal state, as well as an additional association that emerged in 2008 from the Brandenburg Journalists Association and the Association of Berlin Journalists. The members of the DJV can volunteer in their districts and state associations, including in the federal association. Numerous committees are available for this purpose. You can become a member of the respective state board or the seven-member federal board. The members have specialist committees open to collaboration as advisory bodies for the board members. They are divided into professional groups or media types and range from daily newspapers and freelance journalists to radio.

The DJV is independent of the German Federation of Trade Unions . Its journalists' organization is the German Union of Journalists in the United Service Union (ver.di).
