The journal Journalist (spelling journalist , subtitle Das Medienmagazin ) has been the membership booklet of the German Association of Journalists (DJV) since 1967 and sees itself as a specialist publication for journalists . The publisher is the federal board of the DJV, whose office in Bonn also has the editorial office. The magazine is published monthly, since November 2016 by New Business Verlag GmbH & Co KG in Hamburg . The editor-in-chief is Matthias Daniel. Around 87% of readers are members of the DJV.

With the February 2010 edition, the magazine received a new layout and content structure; At the same time, the magazine's website was relaunched . The current eight sections (as of 2017) are: “Forum”, “Title”, “DJV Spectrum”, “People & Opinions”, “Everyday Life & Work”, “Companies & Markets”, “Innovation & Technology” and “Science” & Research ". There are also the three sections “Editorial”, “Imprint” and “And therefore ...”.

Since December 2015 there has been a cooperation with the media-critical initiative News Enlightenment .

Since the January / February 2020 issue, the magazine has been published in a new layout that was developed by the Berlin agency MvonS. Above the title of the first issue was the question “How do we make journalism better?”. Since then, editor-in-chief Matthias Daniel has been running the magazine himself. The trade journal now appears half under the titles journalist and journalist . The delivery of the respective title depends on chance.

Change of publisher and legal dispute in 2016

Until September 2016, the magazine was produced by the Rommerskirchen publishing house from Remagen on behalf of the DJV. The DJV announced the contract on September 30, 2016, the publisher announced a lawsuit against it. The magazine has been published by Hamburg's New Business Verlag since November 2016.

In December 2016, the Rommerskirchen publishing house was still mentioned on the website and the “current edition” was Issue 9/16, while Issue 11/16 was already delivered in print. The editor-in-chief wrote that the magazine was “currently not available via its old channels”.
