Dieter Burkamp

Dieter Burkamp (born November 18, 1940 in Oerlinghausen ; † June 15, 2012 ) was a German journalist , author and publisher .

Life

After school and traineeship , Dieter Burkamp was initially editor of the Westfälische Zeitung or its successor, Neue Westfälische in Bielefeld, from 1963 to 2001 , 35 years of which as editor-in-chief. He then worked as a freelance journalist for West German Broadcasting . In the Bielefeld studio of the WDR he was responsible for regional reporting from East Westphalia-Lippe and until 2012 for police reporting.

Since 1970 he has been working intensively on the subject of caricature . Together with his wife, the art historian Gisela Burkamp , he realized well over a hundred exhibitions on this topic at home and abroad from 1980. In 1989 he was appointed to the jury of the “Satyrykon” caricature competition in Legnica (Poland) for the first time , to which he had been a member for more than a decade. He was also u. a. invited as a jury member to competitions in Antwerp (Belgium), Surgut and Kaliningrad (Russia) as well as in Zemun (Serbia) and Germany. In 1993 Dieter Burkamp curated the exhibition tour "Satyrykon - International Caricatures" together with Theodor Helmert-Corvey, which led to 18 cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2000, as artistic director, he organized the caricature competition “Herman the German” for the 125th birthday of the Hermann monument in the Teutoburg Forest, a year later, together with Walther Keim, the traveling exhibition “Neighbors - German cartoonists see Poland, Polish cartoonists see Germany”, which in was shown in more than 30 cities in Germany and Poland. In 2004, the project “Ten new ones for Europe”, conceived together with Gisela Burkamp, ​​followed on the occasion of the accession of ten other countries to the EU. The exhibition opened in the Berlin House of Representatives and went on tour for three years through Germany, Belgium, Serbia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Poland. In 2007 the German-Serbian project "His Master's Line" was created with drawings by top cartoonists from Europe who are still active, over 75 years old, which Dieter Burkamp carried out together with Branko Najhold. In the mid-1980s, Dieter Burkamp founded the art publisher "edition pro", which publishes portfolios and books. In the last year of his life, he initiated the "2011 Culture Initiative" for the 975th anniversary of his hometown Oerlinghausen . The association of regional institutions and private individuals organized various cultural events.
