Fritz Wolf (born May 7, 1918 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † December 23, 2001 in Bad Rothenfelde ) was a German graphic artist and caricaturist . He worked for the daily newspaper Die Welt , was an employee of the illustrated magazine stern for 35 years and an employee of the women's magazine Brigitte for 25 years . Since 1952 he was the house cartoonist of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung .

Career

He came from a Mülheim family with seven children. Fritz Wolf, the eldest son, did an apprenticeship as a chemigrapher after finishing school in 1934 . He practiced this profession until he was called up for military service. During this time Archilles Markowski, who later founded the Neue Tagespost in Osnabrück, which no longer exists , was his superior.

After the end of World War II, Wolf earned his living by painting lampshades. He volunteered in a graphics studio and studied commercial graphics at the Folkwang-Werkkunstschule in Essen in 1948 and 1949 .

In 1949 he moved with his wife Edith, née Meyerhoff, to Osnabrück ( Lower Saxony ), where he initially lived on Wittkopstrasse in the Sonnenhügel district . In Osnabrück he initially worked as a commercial artist and published his first caricatures in the Neue Tagespost . In 1952 he turned to political caricature and was hired by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung , to which he remained connected until his death. In addition, his work has been published in national and international publications, including Time and Tide (Great Britain). Wolf joined the SPD in 1969 . In 2001 he died after a serious illness in the spa town of Bad Rothenfelde in the Osnabrück district .

Osnabrück's then mayor, Hans-Jürgen Fip, paid tribute to Fritz Wolf, a staunch resident of Osnabrück by choice, as an outstanding representative of contemporary caricature, who always summed up his political and socially critical observations. Fip explained: “His thoughtful, satirical or even cheerful drawings sharpened the eye for the essentials and were appreciated by countless readers of renowned newspapers and magazines.” The artist took an active part in the cultural life of the city. The city of Osnabrück will cultivate his life's work and his artistic legacy and campaign for the appreciation of political caricature beyond its daily topicality. In the Osnabrück plateau, Wolf had always referred to himself ironically and cautiously as a "Manneke painter".
