The Sonnenhügel is a district of Osnabrück with 9,368 inhabitants (12/2018) spread over an area of 3.19 km².

Location and description

The Sonnenhügel district is located in the north of the city. It borders the city center in the south in the area of the Osnabrück Altstadt stop . The south-eastern border with the Gartlage district is formed by the southern part of Knollstrasse and the Lange Wand along the KME AG premises . In the north, the district is separated from the district of Haste by the Nette , and in the west the border with the Hafen district runs along Bramscher Strasse and the Wax Bleaching. The south-western border to the Westerberg district is the Osnabrück – Rheine railway line , and in the east the Dodesheider Landwehrgraben forms the border to the Dodesheide .

The sun hill covers an area of 3.19 km². The district is home to 9368 people (as of 12/2018). At the end of 2009, 58.7% of all households were made up of one person. The Sonnenhügel is mainly characterized by people between the ages of 40 and 65, so at the end of 2011 over 3000 people in this age range lived on the Sonnenhügel. In addition, about 7.1% foreigners live in this district (December 31, 2011).

Due to the moderate rents and the proximity to the city center, the Sonnenhügel is primarily a residential area; There are no significant industrial or commercial enterprises located in it. The largest green spaces in the district are the Bürgerpark and the Hasefriedhof, which has now been rededicated as a park. Until the evacuation of the headquarters of the British armed forces, the second largest proportion of British families lived in the district of Sonnenhügel after the district of Dodesheide. With the departure of the largest garrison outside the United Kingdom, new housing opened up in the north of the district.

history

On the oldest surviving map of Osnabrück from 1633, the sun hill did not belong to the Osnabrück city area, but was still in front of the city gates, more precisely in front of the Hasetor. In general, little was seen of the later urban structure. In front of the Hasetor, which was part of the former city wall, extends the Gertrudenberg, on which the Gertrudenberg Monastery of the same name has stood since the 12th century . The hill belonging to today's Sonnenhügel district was a strategically important point: on the one hand, it allowed a view over the city, and on the other, the ground north of the city was best suited for an attack.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the current part of the city was largely in the "Haaser Lehschaft". The Osnabrück laischaften were self-governing units . The Herrenteichslaischaft and the Heger Laischaft still exist today. Relics from the lay community can still be seen in various places in the city. For example the Haselaischaftsweg on the Sonnenhügel.

As the city expanded, the sun hill was gradually opened up. Worth mentioning here is the building of the “lunatic asylum” on Gertrudenberg in 1868 or on Knollstrasse from 1864, which is now operated as a psychiatric clinic under the name Ameos Klinikum Osnabrück .

The Gertrudenberg caves below the Gertrudenberg are largely unnoticed by the public . Various myths surround the branched and approximately 900 m long tunnel system. The caves were created in the 14th century by a quarry on Gertrudenberg. During the Second World War , the underground complex was used as an air raid shelter, which could accommodate several thousand people. The caves are currently closed to the public, but an association is working to open them to visitors in the future.

Development

Due to the close proximity to the old town , the southern part of the sunny hill in particular is characterized by older buildings. These include the villas along Wittkopstrasse as well as town houses from the Wilhelminian era along Ziegelstrasse, Bramscher Strasse and Süntelstrasse through to the historic Hasetorfriedhof . In Kornstrasse there are buildings based on the Bauhaus , Thor's houses , from 1928. To the north of the Bürgerpark and Hasetorfriedhof, the district is characterized by single and multi-family houses from the post-war period. The so-called "British houses", which were inhabited by the British armed forces, are of particular importance, as Osnabrück was the largest British garrison outside of Great Britain until 2009. In the Sonnenhügel, members of the military of lower rank lived primarily in the bird settlement near the Winkelhausenkaserne .

traffic

The bus lines 32/33 in the direction of Nettebad and 31/51/52/53 in the direction of Dodesheide of the local public transport open up the Sonnenhügel on the Süntel- or Lerchenstraße and the Knollstraße. The 81/82 to Pye and the 41 to Haste run on Bramscher Straße. Together with Vehrter Landstrasse, these streets form the main traffic axes in the district. Here the noise level can be up to 75 dB (A). The next train stop is the Osnabrück Altstadt stop (formerly Osnabrück Hasetor). Until the end of the 1950s, the Sonnenhügel was connected to the Osnabrück tram line 2, which went from Haste via Bramscher Straße, Hasetor, Nikolaiort, Neumarkt to Schölerberg .

Facilities

Religion and social

The Sonnenhügel is home to several church buildings: The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit and its respective parishes can be found on Lerchenstrasse and the Evangelical Lutheran St. Matthew's Church on Moorlandstrasse. Also on Lerchenstraße is the former Church of the Redeemer of the Evangelical Reformed Congregation. In May 2010 the Greek Orthodox community took over the building of the church. The Gertrudenberg Monastery is located between Bürgerpark and Knollstraße , on the hill of the same name. In addition to the former abbot's house, the Gertrudenkirche has also been preserved. This acts as a simultaneous church.

There is a Franciscan monastery on Bramscher Straße that offers help for the homeless. A children's home run by the Don Bosco Catholic youth welfare organization has stood on Moorlandstrasse since 1957 . Another social institution in the district is the Karl-Luhmann-Heim on Knollstrasse for the hearing impaired, which is operated by the HHO .

schools

Due to its character as a residential area, there are several schools on the Sonnenhügel that cooperate with each other.

The city's Albert Schweitzer School has been located on Lerchenstrasse since 1956. Around 150 children are taught at the primary school. It shares the building complex and schoolyard with the Heilig-Geist-Schule, founded in 1960, which is primarily aimed at "students of the Catholic faith" and is also a primary school. Every year the children take part in the traditional hobby horse riding.

A few hundred meters away is the Sonnenhügel school center (formerly the Sebastopol school center). The Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium, the Wittekind-Realschule and the Felix-Nussbaum-Schule, which is a secondary school, are located here. Around 1370 pupils visit the school center, which is located on Knollstrasse. In the immediate vicinity is the Anne Frank School, a “special school for physical and motor development”, the cafeteria and sports hall of the school center as well as the Sonnenhügel sports facility, which is also used by the SSC Dodesheide. The Sophie Scholl orientation stage also existed until 2004.

The first school building has existed on Knollstrasse since 1975, initially housing the Sebastopol orientation level. By 1982, all schools moved into the building complex. The Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium was previously located on Lotter Straße, where the former Federal President Christian Wulff graduated from high school. The school center was completely renovated in February 2001 after a devastating fire.

The sunny hill offers some leisure activities. The Nettebad is located in the north . After the renovation in 2005, it is known as an “action, swimming and wellness pool” and is also known nationwide. In addition to various slides and leisure pools, the Nettebad offers competition tracks both inside and outside. A sauna area is also connected to the swimming pool.

Directly opposite, on Verther Landstrasse, is the Osnabrück ice sports center. While an ice rink is available in winter, you can drive on a taxiway in the hall in the summer months. There is also a BMX track behind the ice rink. In addition to the Nettebad, the Nettedrom electric kart hall was built by 2017 .

There is a sensory garden on the grounds of the AMEOS Clinic on Knollstrasse .

The SSC Dodesheide has be different as the name suggests, its clubhouse in the district sun hill at Reinhold tiling path. The club, which has existed since 1962, offers a wide range of sports and is one of the largest in the city with around 2800 members. In the immediate vicinity there are several sports fields for tennis, football and athletics as well as the sports hall of the Sonnenhügel school center.

The Osnabrück Tennis Club eV from 1908 is located at the foot of the Bürgerpark, on Süntelstrasse. In addition to a tennis hall and the clubhouse, several tennis courts are part of the club's facility.

Others

The name of the district is based on the slight hill located in the area of Hügelstrasse / Kornstrasse in the north of the district. The Gertrudenberg in the south of the district is a 97 m high elevation that has nothing to do with the name.

The Haste – Dodesheide – Sonnenhügel – Töne , a citizens' newspaper for the three neighboring districts in the north of Osnabrück, is published at irregular intervals .

The Chamber of Crafts Osnabrück-Emsland-Grafschaft Bentheim has its seat on Bramscher Straße .
