Widukindland is a district of Osnabrück . It is located in the northeast of the city on the slopes of the Schinkelberg . The district borders in the north on the district of Dodesheide , in the west on the Gartlage , in the south on today's district Schinkel and Schinkel-Ost and in the east on Darum / Gretesch / Lüstringen and the municipality of Belm . The Widukindland emerged from the former district of Schinkel. In the district, which is characterized by single-family houses, large gardens and forest areas, 4,946 people live on 275.5 hectares (12/2018).

history

The urban development of the Widukindland began in the 1920s. B. the Freiheitsweg and the Heimatweg laid out in 1922. Settlement construction between Bremer Strasse and the Osnabrück – Bremen railway was then driven forward primarily under the NSDAP in the 1930s as a small settlement area . During the planning, care was taken to ensure that each house had a garden for self-sufficiency .

Both the naming of the district itself and many of the streets are due to the zeitgeist that prevailed when the Widukindland was built. The name of the district goes back to the Saxon Duke Wittekind . The streets and squares in Widukindland bear the names of Germanic tribes, indigenous personalities and important places (e.g. " Sigiburgweg ", " Sachsenweg ", " Cheruskerweg ") or are named after current social values at the time (e.g. " Vaterlandsweg "," Kameradschaftsweg "," Freiheitsweg "," Heimatweg ").

Even after the Second World War, the development of the Widukindland continued. B. created in 1953. 1976–1977, the 158 meter high telecommunications tower Osnabrück 8 , called Schinkelturm , was built on the Schinkelberg by the Deutsche Funkturm . To this day it is a widely visible “landmark” of the district.

To this day, the Widukindland is mainly characterized by open residential developments, with a few commercial businesses being located there. The forest areas Carolinger Holz and Gartlage in the west and the Schinkelberg south of the district offer opportunities for local recreation.

The only educational institution in Widukindland is a municipal primary school. The ev.-luth. Church Timotheus and the cath. St. Boniface Congregation. The building of the Timotheuskirche is an architecturally interesting sacral building from the 1950s, built by the architect Max H. Berling . The first pastor of the community was René Leudesdorff . Both parishes each run a kindergarten. There is a children's club run by the children's aid organization Die Arche on Bremer Straße .

The sports club based in the district is TSV Widukindland . A sports facility in the east of Widukindland was abandoned for the expansion of the A 33 . Medical care consists of several doctor and therapy practices. In addition, there are various catering, local supply and service companies for everyday needs.

The public transport connection of the Widukindland consists of the city bus lines M4, 10/20 and the night bus line N4. The district has its own junction on the A 33.
