Fledder is a district east of the inner city of Osnabrück , which is largely characterized by commercial space. In addition to numerous commercial enterprises and large hypermarkets, there are comparatively few residential buildings here. In Fledder live 2555 inhabitants (12/2019), spread over an area of 3.75 km².

History as a commercial district

The Petersburg fortress , which existed during the Thirty Years' War, was located in the area of today's Fledder district, no remains of it have survived today. In 1868, the "Eisen- und Stahlwerk zu Osnabrück" (iron and steel works in Osnabrück) settled in the Haseniederung south of the then still sparsely populated Schinkel on the Hanoverian West Railway, which had opened a few years earlier . In 1912 a central marshalling yard was built south of the steelworks. In the 1930s, the automobile manufacturer Karmann , whose factory premises were still on Martinistraße at the time, moved into its new factory buildings. In the 1960s, the marshalling yard was expanded and fundamentally modernized, but the capacities were soon no longer sufficient.

In 1962 the city of Osnabrück advertised the Fledder district as an industrial area. The vision of turning this industrial area into a coherent wholesale center goes back to the managing director of the wholesale association Hans-Achim Castan (1929–1990). After the old Osnabrück wholesale district between the main station and the city center had been cut up after the Second World War by the expansion of the inner ring and ever greater traffic problems emerged, Castan had already dealt with the plans for a new wholesale center in Fledder in the early 1960s. Through lengthy and persistent negotiations, including with the city on land issues and development plans, with wholesalers, whose interest he sought to arouse for this project, as well as with the Federal Ministry of Economics and credit institutions on financing issues, Castan achieved that the wholesale center was fully expanded relatively quickly. In a very short time, many companies settled there that needed a rail connection in addition to road connections, which led to a further expansion of the marshalling yard. Today, the Fledder, together with the port , is one of the two largest industrial and commercial areas in Osnabrück.

Companies

Building of the former Karmann factory, today VW Osnabrück

The most important companies that have their headquarters in Fledder today include:

former companies are also:

  • Osnabrück steelworks (later Klöckner-Werk ), closed in 1989
  • Karmann , automobile manufacturer, insolvent in 2009 and taken over by Volkswagen
  • IAG Magnum, steel processor, part of the GMH Group , closed in 2016

Conversion of industrial areas

Larger areas in Fledder are currently in a conversion process . The site of the Klöckner steelworks, which was closed in 1989, in the north of the district was converted into an industrial area ("Hasepark"). The areas of the freight train handling area, which was abandoned years ago, have a hall and a depot with roundhouse to the west of the marshalling yard, which is still in use today. Various usage concepts discussed in recent years (e.g. commercial, residential, event space, mixed use) have so far remained unsuccessful. a. this is because a large part of the site is not owned by the city of Osnabrück. After the steel processor IAG Magnum also had to close at the end of 2016, this site is also about to be converted. B. an extension of the Hasepark.

Transport links

The Fledder has its own junction on the federal highway 33 . The main traffic axis of the district is the multi-lane one-way and arterial road Hannoversche Straße , which leads from the city center to the A 33 and beyond to Voxtrup . The Schellenberg Bridge connects the Fledder with the Schinkel district .

The railway infrastructure includes the Wanne-Eickel – Hamburg railway in the west of the district and the Löhne – Rheine railway , which crosses the Fledder from west to east. The main station is at the intersection of the two routes , but there is no direct access for travelers from Fledder. The marshalling yard also goes off the Löhne – Rheine railway line. Even today, some companies have in Fledder on sidings .

Origin of name

The name of the district was based on the old field name for a lowland area southwest of the city center. Because of its deep, damp location, this area was only suitable for pasture. Such moorland areas that are only thinly covered with earth, or areas of land on which water spreads without seeping in quickly, were called "Fladder" or "Fledder" in Osnabrück. In the vernacular, the bat is often said.

Others

Except for the offices of some authorities, there are hardly any public facilities such as schools etc. in Fledder, which can be explained by the comparatively small number of inhabitants. In the north of the district the Hase flows , which in this area is divided into a main arm (called Neue Hase ) and a side arm (called Klöckner Hase ).

bunker

There is a round bunker from the Second World War on Schellenbergstrasse . Today the site belongs to Volkswagen Osnabrück. Furthermore, there used to be an air protection tower Kiebitzheide, but it was demolished. At the corner of Stahlwerksweg and Bielefelder Straße there is a former bunker, which is now used by various companies as office space and work halls.
