The Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH is on automotive development and production specialized subsidiary of Volkswagen AG , headquartered in Lower Saxony Osnabrück .
The company essentially comprises the site of the former Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, which became insolvent in 2009, with the exception of the roof systems division, and was bought out of the bankruptcy estate by Volkswagen AG for around 39 million euros.
Volkswagen Osnabrück is positioned within the Volkswagen Group as a competence center for convertible and small series production and as a full production site. This means that the corresponding vehicles are produced entirely at the Osnabrück site, from the design drawing to final assembly. These competencies have only been used to a limited extent since production of the Golf Cabrio and XL1 were discontinued in 2016. Instead, if necessary, productions of the various brands of the VW Group are to be relocated to Osnabrück in the future (called “multi-brand competence”).
history
After Karmann had to file for bankruptcy in April 2009, takeover talks with Volkswagen began in the summer. The takeover talks were accompanied by political pressure from the state of Lower Saxony, which holds almost 20 percent of the shares in VW, and the then Prime Minister Christian Wulff . The partial takeover was finally decided in November 2009 and Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH was entered in the commercial register in December ; In March 2010, the areas, buildings and production facilities of the vehicle production division were taken over. In December 2010 Volkswagen took over the development department and in March 2011 the metal division from the bankruptcy estate. A large part of the employees was also taken over.
production
Production of the Golf Cabrio began in March 2011 . For the Porsche subsidiary , production bottlenecks at the main factory in Zuffenhausen are to be absorbed and the production of the Boxster and Cayman models will be outsourced to Osnabrück if required. On September 19, 2012, production of the Boxster started in Osnabrück on behalf of Porsche. In February 2013, Volkswagen also announced that a small series of the one-liter VW XL1 would be built in Osnabrück. 200 XL1s were manufactured between 2014 and 2016. As of June 8, 2015, the third Porsche model, the Cayenne, was also assembled in Osnabrück. In 2016, the painting and assembly of the discontinued models of the first Tiguan generation for the North American market was relocated to Osnabrück, while production of the Golf Cabrio was discontinued.
On behalf of the VW subsidiary MOIA GmbH and in cooperation with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles , Volkswagen Osnabrück has developed an electric minibus based on the VW Crafter, the MOIA +6 , within ten months . With this vehicle, MOIA wants to offer driving services in large cities. A pilot project started in Hamburg in 2019. For this purpose, the minibus has been built in the Osnabrück plant since 2018.
The final assembly of the Škoda Karoq has been carried out since 2018 . Complete production of the T-Roc Cabriolet began in December 2019, and up to 20,000 units are to be built annually.
