The Volkswagen plant in Braunschweig is the oldest plant of Volkswagen AG . It was built from February 1938 as a so-called "Vorwerk" .

Around 6,625 people are employed at the Volkswagen plant in Braunschweig (as of 2014). It is Braunschweig's largest industrial company.

history

The German Labor Front (DAF) leased a large area on Gifhorner Strasse in northern Braunschweig for the Volkswagen “Vorwerk” . At that time there were several allotment garden associations on this site, for example the horticultural association "Sonniges Land", which was located in the area of hall 5 (production and administration) or the horticultural association "Gunther", on whose premises hall 7 (toolmaking) was built. It was originally planned that the plant should start work on April 1, 1938, but the start of construction was delayed for various reasons. The groundbreaking ceremony for the production halls, training workshops and dormitories finally took place on February 23, 1938, before the actual VW factory was built near Fallersleben .

In the Vorwerk Braunschweig, specially selected young people were to be trained as skilled workers and volunteers in order to then work in the VW main plant . The three-year apprenticeship began in autumn 1938, and the second year already comprised 308 apprentices. The vocational training in the "model training workshop" took into account modern methods with theoretical and experimental teaching and was thus innovative compared to contemporary vocational school teaching and industrial training standards. At the same time, of course, it was associated with sporty-military drill, unconditional subordination and, to a lesser extent, National Socialist indoctrination.

The Vorwerk served to train qualified personnel for the Wolfsburg plant and to prepare for production there. It was also referred to as the “Ordensburg of Labor”. Within the complex there were the areas of work and training as well as a separate boarding school, which was assigned to the Hitler Youth of Bann 468. The training complex was divided into eight apprentice homes, each of which implemented its own training concepts. There was a subdivision into patrol service, navy, fire brigade and the Bann-Musikzug as well as two buildings each for the engine and flight followers. There was also the so-called “Nibelungen Camp”, in which both forced laborers and members of the Hitler Youth were employed.

For the main plant, the Vorwerk initially produced semi-finished products for transformer construction there as well as gauges and tools for Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke AG in Dessau .

During the Second World War , the Vorwerk Braunschweig also manufactured armaments (parts for aircraft engines). At the airport Waggum a hall was built specifically to combat type aircraft Junkers Ju 88 to repair and assemble. The apprentices were increasingly used in ongoing production and less and less trained. After the war ended, the British military government confiscated parts of the factory. In December 1945, the production of components for the Wolfsburg parent plant began again, while the specific training measures in the Braunschweig plant were not resumed. Until 1950 the plant was officially called Vorwerk .

In 2011 it was planned to build the largest parking garage in the city of Braunschweig on the grounds of the Vorwerk in order to improve the parking situation for employees.

The plant in the VW group

Initially, the Braunschweig plant produced steering systems for the “ KdF-Wagen ” ( VW Beetle ). Even today it is a pure supplier company, but also operates a coaching department for vocational training and employee training. In Braunschweig, among other things, chassis parts , rear and front axles, shock absorbers , but also brakes, brake discs, steering gears and all foot levers are manufactured. In addition, there is machine and tool construction as well as plastic parts production. Customers include not only the Volkswagen brand, but also all other Volkswagen AG automobile manufacturers such as Porsche , Audi , Škoda , Seat and Bugatti .

Logistics Business Unit Braunschweig

The logistics department in the Braunschweig business unit delivers the products to around 150 customers worldwide and is responsible for controlling the flow of materials from around 1,500 suppliers. Distribution takes place by rail or with around 300 trucks that drive into the plant every day. The most efficient possible utilization and a reduction in packaging material are implemented in order to reduce environmental pollution.

The plant's heating house, which is fired with natural gas, produces technical heat. The CO 2 emissions are below the allocation amount, so that the excess emission certificates can be sold through emission trading .
