Chemnitz engine plant
The Chemnitz engine plant is a production site of Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH. Other large locations are the Zwickau vehicle plant and the Transparent Factory in Dresden . In 2015, the Chemnitz engine plant employed 1,750 people.
With an area of 213,000 m², it is located on the former Chemnitz site of the former Auto Union AG, exactly opposite their first company headquarters. In the Chemnitz plant are three- and four-cylinder - petrol engines with 1.0 to 1.5-liter displacement ( MPI , TSI , CNG ) and balance shaft gear made (as a module or integrated version), integrated valve drive modules, connecting rods and crankshafts. Up to 3,000 engines and 4,000 balancer shaft drives can roll off the assembly line there every day.
The history of the plant goes back to the VEB IFA-Kombinat Karl-Marx-Stadt of the GDR . In the 1980s, license production of the four-stroke VW EA111 engine for VW (including the VW Polo ) and for the Wartburg 1.3 (from 1988) and Trabant 1.1 (from 1990) car models began here . After the production of these two models was discontinued in 1991, Volkswagen AG got involved and set up a modern components plant, which today primarily serves the plants in Zwickau (formerly Mosel near Zwickau ) and Bratislava (Slovakia).
