Several vehicle models from the automobile manufacturer Volkswagen are referred to as Golf Cabriolet or Golf Cabrio . From March 1979 the first model on the technical basis of the Golf I was produced, followed by models based on the Golf III and Golf VI . 389,000 cars of the Golf I Cabriolet were produced by August 1993; From September 1993 to April 1998 the successor model based on the Golf III was produced 171,000 times. From April 1998 to June 2002 there was a facelift version of the Golf III Cabriolet with the look of the Golf IV .
Karmann manufactured all Golf Cabriolet generations in Osnabrück , which were also involved in the development of the open Golf and which continued to produce the previous Beetle Cabriolet model until January 1980. Volkswagen de México also produced individual vehicles from the Golf III and Golf IV Cabriolet series at the Puebla plant .
From spring 1979 until production was discontinued in mid-2002, the Golf Cabriolet was always one of the most popular open-top vehicles on the German and Austrian markets.
In June 2011, Volkswagen launched a new Golf Cabriolet based on the Golf VI , which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011 .
Introduction of the roll bar
The first prototype manufactured by Wilhelm Karmann GmbH in December 1976 did not yet have a roll bar . A discussion about vehicle safety began in the USA in the 1970s . Accordingly, driving a convertible was extremely "unsafe", as the vehicles offered little resistance or protection in the event of side collisions and accidents with rollover. For this reason, VW introduced the roll bar in the open Golf. In its production version, the Golf Cabriolet was the first open vehicle with a fixed roll bar.
Initially, the new car was not well received by customers who were used to the Beetle and was disparagingly referred to as the “strawberry basket”, especially in the red paintwork with the new roll bar. What was seen as critical about the new VW model was that the “open driving feeling” is limited by the rear side windows and the bar, which cannot be completely retracted. It is advantageous, however, that the front seat belts (the four-seater car only has lap belts on the two rear seats ) have a higher upper pivot point on the bracket, which increases safety in the event of accidents with rollover and increases the torsional rigidity of the body.
After the Golf Cabriolet, many other automobile manufacturers also installed roll bars in their convertibles. Some examples are the Ford Escort Cabriolet (1983), the Peugeot 205 Cabriolet (1986) and the Opel Kadett Cabriolet (1987).
Even in the last generation up to 2002, the roll bar was still to be found on the Golf Cabrio. In more modern convertibles (as of 2013), roll bars are hardly used any more, since automatically opening supports often serve as roll-over protection. Even the Golf Cabriolet built from March 2011 on the basis of the Golf VI no longer has a fixed roll bar.
Tarpaulin
With the Golf I Cabriolet, it is mandatory to use the tarpaulin supplied with the roof open ; Especially to protect passers-by in the event of accidents from exposed and sharp-edged metal joints. With the first model up to August 1981 - from then on the open roof was 10 cm lower - the convertible top was built very high, so that there was a risk of swinging and the lock was triggered if the road was poor. The wind then moved the unlocked top up. In the following generations (Golf III and IV), the hood is placed lower, which also enables a better view to the rear. The tarpaulin is not absolutely necessary, but was supplied with the Golf Cabrio III / IV in order to avoid dirtying the sky .

The first Golf Cabriolet was offered with two engines from March 1979:
- Cabriolet GLS with 1.5 liter displacement and 51 kW (70 PS)
- Cabriolet GLi with 1.6 liter displacement and 81 kW (110 PS)
After production of the Beetle Cabriolet was discontinued at the beginning of 1980, the open Golf, whose production began on February 14, 1979 at Wilhelm Karmann GmbH in Osnabrück, became a bestseller. After sales figures for convertibles rose steadily in the 1980s and the Golf convertible also appeared in numerous television series ( Schwarzwaldklinik , Remington Steele ) and ( Stranger Things ), the vehicle achieved a certain cult status and is now (2020) a sought-after young timer .
Compared to the normal Golf I, the weight of the bodyshell alone of the Cabriolet has increased by 90 kg; compared to the Golf I GTI, the GLI Cabriolet is 140 kg heavier. In addition to the GTI engine (110 PS, K-Jetronic), the GLI Cabriolet also has the sportier chassis with firmer shock absorbers, slightly widened tires and also slightly widened fender cutouts. Compared to the VW Beetle Cabriolet, the body deflection has been reduced by 10% and the torsion by 40%. The roof consists of five layers: Under the outer roof cover there is a layer of nettle material, then a 20 mm thick layer of upholstery made of rubber hair, underneath again nettle material and then the plastic headliner. The drag coefficient is 0.48 with the roof closed, 0.53 with the roof open with closed windows and 0.55 with the roof open and the window panes fully open.
Production of the first Golf Cabriolet continued after the Golf I was replaced by the VW Golf II in August 1983 .
With the facelift referred to by VW as an “all-round spoiler replacement”, the optics were adapted to the taste of the time in May 1987. The radiator grille was ribbed more coarsely and the car was given a wider, more beefy shape thanks to larger plastic bumpers with attached wheel arches and sill extensions. The engine range generally corresponded to the current petrol engines from the Golf throughout the entire construction period.
The Golf I Cabrio was available with a driver's airbag on request from 1992 , making it the first VW to have an airbag. Contrary to popular belief, the model was never available with an anti-lock braking system (ABS).
From September 1992 the car was only offered with the 1.8 liter engine with an output of 72 kW (98 hp) and a regulated catalytic converter. This engine complied with the Euro 1 emissions standard.
Many special models came out: Quartett, Bel Air, Young Line, Fashion Line, Classic Line, Toscana, Sportline, Coast, Acapulco, Genesis and Etienne Aigner.

The Golf IV Cabriolet came out in spring 1998. Despite its name, it was not a convertible based on the VW Golf IV , it was merely a facelift of the Golf III convertible. The changes were limited to the modified front and rear sections as well as some details in the interior such as blue / red dashboard lighting and new surfaces.
Production was stopped in mid-2002, initially without a direct successor. Instead, the VW New Beetle appeared as a convertible in spring 2003 .

Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test |
After Volkswagen AG took over large parts of the insolvent Karmann company from the end of 2009 , the newly founded Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH began in March 2011 a. a. with the production of the Golf VI Cabriolet in November 2012 on the former Karmann site.
After a break of almost ten years, a new Golf Cabrio appeared in June 2011, this time based on the Golf VI . The production site is still Osnabrück; the convertible has been built by Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH since the insolvency of the car manufacturer Karmann and the VW takeover of the plant .
The Golf VI Cabriolet is available with gasoline engines from 77 to 195 kW and diesel engines from 77 to 103 kW.
The GTI convertible was added in mid-2012 and an R version with 195 kW in spring 2013 .
At the end of February 2016, VW announced that the Golf Cabrio would be discontinued. The released capacity in Osnabrück is for the outlet of production of the VW Tiguan I used. To say goodbye, VW is also issuing a last edition version with a numbered badge based on GTI, limited to 200 copies . It is available from € 46,500.
safety
The Golf VI Cabriolet achieved five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test.
In a rollover test carried out by the ADAC, the A-pillar was severely deformed. The safety of the front occupants is rated “poor”. For the rear occupants there is a “very good” survival space with a “satisfactory” head load.
