The VW Scirocco III is a 2 + 2-seater estate coupé with front-wheel drive , which was first presented to the public in spring 2008 at the Geneva Motor Show, has been available since August 2008 and is based on the platform of the VW Golf VI . The VW internal designation is "Type 13". Like the VW Eos , it was produced by Volkswagen Autoeuropa in Palmela , Portugal , where the VW Sharan , the Seat Alhambra and the VW T-Roc are also built.

The Scirocco III replaced the Corrado , which expired in the summer of 1995, and was voted “Car of the Year 2008” by Top Gear Magazine . Production ceased with the 2017 model year.

Body and design

Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test 5 crash test stars

The third generation of the Scirocco was first presented in its current form as a design study and concept vehicle with the name VW Iroc on August 24, 2006 in Berlin.

The name "Iroc" should establish the relationship to the name of "Sc Iroc co". Most of the exterior design elements and features of the body were carried over to the production version and were created by the German former VW designer Murat Günak . Among other things, he was also responsible for the design of the VW Golf V , VW Eos and VW Tiguan .

The design of the front of the Scirocco's body is noticeable, among other things, by the large air inlets on the front bumper, the distinctive honeycomb structure on the air inlet grille and the silhouette of the bonnet - together with the black radiator protection louvres (these are painted black on the "R" model), they give the sports coupé a so-called "evil eye". This impression is reinforced by the headlight housings that seamlessly merge into the louvres of the radiator grille. The Volkswagen emblem is embedded flat in the bonnet. The sideline rises while the roofline slopes backwards.

The body of the Scirocco is galvanized to protect against corrosion and thus largely protected against rust. However, the tailgate can show signs of rust.

technology

Technically, the third generation Scirocco is based on the PQ35 platform with transverse engine introduced by VW with the Golf V , which is also used in the Golf VI . The interior of the new Scirocco has been adopted almost unchanged from the VW Eos for cost reasons and upgraded with aluminum look elements.

Furnishing

Standard features include 17 "alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and handbrake lever, height-adjustable sports seats, power windows, air conditioning, brake assist , six airbags , speed-dependent power steering and vehicle dynamics control (ESP). The ESP can seem to be deactivated with a button, but it still stays in Background activated in another sportier mode.

Special features include the rear sports bench seat with the character of a single seat and integral headrests, which can also be folded down as standard, as well as the concealed B-pillar , which is intended to make the vehicle look more stretched and sportier.

The ParkPilot, available on request, warns of obstacles when parking with acoustic signals: the closer the vehicle gets to an obstacle, the higher the audio frequency. In addition to acoustic signals, the image from the “Rear Assist” reversing camera is reproduced realistically on the radio display . The clear view behind the vehicle enables easy parking despite the wide C-pillars and small rear windows. Thanks to the high-resolution and detailed display, even small obstacles such as curbs can be clearly identified (both of which are optional extras).

Facelift

In April 2014 the Scirocco underwent a facelift.

Externally, it can be recognized by the modified front and revised rear lights. In addition, the entire range of engines was geared towards greater performance and efficiency.

The VW logo on the rear was now used to open the trunk.

Production was stopped in summer 2017.

safety

The VW Scirocco reached the Euro-NCAP - Crash Test 2009 five stars in years. The Scirocco also has an extensive airbag system as standard: one airbag each for the driver and front passenger with front passenger airbag deactivation, a head airbag system for the passengers in both rows of seats and side airbags at the front. The airbags are triggered by crash sensors: if an impact is registered, the airbag control unit ignites the gas generator, which inflates the airbags within 30 to 40 milliseconds.

The Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) , which is also included as standard, helps prevent the vehicle from swerving in critical driving situations by specifically intervening in the brake and engine management. The vehicle thus achieves maximum directional stability even in critical situations. The system can also be switched off if necessary, although it still remains activated in the background for safety in a more severe and sporty mode.

Thanks to the standard "hill start assistant", you can start off easily and safely even on steep inclines.

A system is also available for a surcharge, which registers signs of drowsiness in the driver, including deviating from normal steering behavior, and recommends taking a break via optical and acoustic signals.

The “Plus” anti- theft alarm system, which is also subject to a surcharge, has interior monitoring including an electronic immobilizer and towing protection in the interior light module of the headliner .

Engines

TSI

Only two petrol engines were initially available for the Scirocco III: a 1.4-liter TSI with 118 kW (160 PS) and the 2.0-liter TSI with 147 kW (200 PS). The combination of direct petrol injection (TSI) and intelligent engine charging allows petrol engines with TSI technology to work particularly effectively: They are intended to combine advantages such as high performance and low consumption. In addition, these newer TSI engines from VW are based on a new basic design whose camshafts are driven via a timing chain instead of a toothed belt and which have an oil pump with a regulated volume flow.

1.4 TSI

The 1.4 liter TSI engine is double charged (“twin charger”) - at low speeds a compressor provides pressure and at higher speeds a turbocharger . This charging system has so far not been widely used except in ship propulsion systems. The engine thus delivers 118 kW (160 hp) and achieves a torque of 240 Nm, which is available from 1500 rpm and remains constant up to 4500 rpm. Therefore, according to Auto Bild , the 1.4-liter TSI hangs “impressively confidently on the accelerator and can be accelerated smoothly from the lowest engine speeds”.

How the system called “Twincharger” by VW works : The regulated boost pressure of the compressor is available from the engine's idling speed until an exhaust gas turbocharger supports the charging of the engine from around 2000 rpm , in order to completely take over the boost pressure from around 3500 rpm . The compressor is then switched off via a magnetic clutch .

With this technology, the major disadvantages of the two loaders are eliminated:

  • The “ turbo lag ” of the exhaust gas turbocharger is bridged by the compressor.
  • At higher speeds, the compressor is disconnected from the crankshaft and no longer draws any power from the engine.

This combined supercharging of a gasoline engine by means of a compressor and turbocharger was already used in a similar form in the 200 series vehicles of the Group B rally vehicle Lancia Delta S4 in the 1980s .

In autumn 2008, the entry-level model was followed by the 1.4-liter TSI and with 90 kW (122 hp) output with simple turbocharging. Another special feature of this engine is the intercooler integrated into the intake manifold . The engine block was also adapted to the power ratios and made lighter.

2.0 TSI

In the 2.0-liter TSI, a single turbocharger charges the engine.

The 2.0-liter TSI engine has been available since the end of 2009 - as in the Golf VI - with 155 kW (211 hp) instead of the previous 147 kW (200 hp). The engines are the further development of the 1.8 l TSI from the EA888 engine series.

Also at the end of 2009 a sportier model called Scirocco R appeared , which is based on the VW Scirocco GT24 and is equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox or optionally with the 6-speed DSG. The engine for the "R" model comes from the Audi S3 and is from the EA113 engine series . It develops 195 kW (265 hp) and has a torque of 350 Nm at 2,500 to 5,000 rpm.

In addition, this model of the Scirocco has been equipped with a body kit and other aluminum wheels, among other things, to distinguish it from the usual models. The Scirocco R therefore has, among other things, special R-Line bumpers at the front and rear. In addition, the widened side skirts, the rear spoiler in body color, darkened taillights and a black grained diffuser at the rear characterize this equipment line.

2.0 TDI

The 2-liter TDI diesel engine with 103 kW (140 PS) has been available since autumn 2008. According to VW, the TDI diesel engine with common rail injection has the highest efficiency currently achievable for small diesel engines of up to 45 percent. It should combine economy with pulling power and smoothness.

The 2-liter TDI diesel engine with 125 kW (170 hp) has also been available since May 2009.

In January 2013, the 2-liter TDI engine with 170 PS (125 kW) was replaced by the 177 PS (130 kW) engine. This was installed in the Audi A4, among other things.

Blue motion

The Scirocco is also available with " BlueMotion " on request to save fuel and reduce pollutant emissions. The 1.4-liter TSI engine, the 2.0-liter TDI engine and the DSG dual clutch transmission from Volkswagen form the basis. Together with a number of fuel-saving devices such as the start-stop system or braking energy recovery ( recuperation ), they help reduce consumption and CO 2 emissions in the Scirocco with “BlueMotion Technology” .

transmission

All engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. A six-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG) with steering wheel paddles is optionally available for the petrol engines with 147 kW or 155 kW and the diesel engine ; the 1.4-liter TSI with 118 kW (160 PS) is available with a seven-speed direct shift gearbox.

The dual clutch transmission - called DSG by Volkswagen - automatically changes to the next preselected gear in just a few hundredths of a second, almost imperceptibly and without any interruption of tractive power. Because of the short shift times and direct response, the sporty acceleration takes place measurably just as quickly as with a manual transmission; only the coupling is not necessary. The DSG can be used both as an automatic transmission and shifted using paddles on the steering wheel. It is not only more dynamic to drive than a conventional automatic transmission, but also helps to save fuel thanks to its efficiency.

landing gear

The front axle with MacPherson struts and triangular wishbones has a particularly low weight thanks to the use of high-strength materials and takes up little space. A " four-link axle " is installed at the rear .

The front / rear weight distribution is given as 65 to 35 percent.

The Scirocco is available with " Dynamic Chassis Control " at an additional cost - three-way adjustable shock absorbers that can be adapted to the respective driving situation; Within milliseconds, each damper automatically adjusts itself individually to the roadway and the driving situation. You can choose between the SPORT, NORMAL and COMFORT settings. In the SPORT setting, the steering characteristics are also adapted to a sporty driving style.
